Chapter 1 - THE FIRST SOUND

The ballroom went silent before anyone realized why.

One second, music floated beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Blackwood Foundation gala.

The next—

BANG!

A gunshot shattered the night.

People screamed.

Champagne glasses exploded across marble floors. Guests dropped behind tables. Security guards reached beneath their jackets.

And in the middle of the chaos stood four-year-old Eli Blackwood.

He wasn't crying.

He never cried.

Not anymore.

For two years, the little boy had lived inside a silence no doctor had been able to break.

His father, Damian Blackwood, had tried everything.

Therapists.

Specialists.

Private clinics.

Even doctors flown in from overseas.

Nothing.

Eli had spoken once when he was two.

Then his mother died.

And the words disappeared with her.

Until tonight.

The second shot came from the balcony.

Damian saw the muzzle flash.

His blood froze.

“ELI!”

The boy stood directly in the gunman's line of fire.

Damian lunged.

But someone reached Eli first.

Mara Bennett.

The Blackwood family's new nanny threw herself over the child.

The bullet struck her upper shoulder.

She gasped and collapsed onto one knee.

Blood spread across the emerald-green fabric of her dress.

Eli stared at her.

The room erupted around them.

Damian reached them seconds later.

“Mara!”

She tried to push herself upright.

“Take him,” she whispered.

Damian grabbed his son.

But Eli wasn't looking at his father.

He was staring at Mara.

At the blood running down her arm.

At the woman who had placed her own body between him and a bullet.

Mara's fingers trembled.

“It's okay,” she whispered to him. “You're safe.”

Eli's lips parted.

Damian stopped breathing.

For two years, he'd watched those lips remain silent.

Now—

A tiny sound escaped.

“Ma…”

Damian's face changed.

Mara looked up.

Eli grabbed her hand.

“Mommy…”

The word was barely audible.

But Damian heard it.

Every person in that ballroom heard the impossible sound.

His son had spoken.

Damian's knees nearly gave way.

Then Eli screamed.

“DON'T LET HER DIE!”

Damian stared at his son as though the entire world had stopped turning.

Four years old.

Silent for two years.

And his first full sentence wasn't about himself.

It was about Mara.

“Get the ambulance!” Damian roared.

Security rushed toward the doors.

But Damian barely noticed.

He pulled Eli against his chest while watching Mara struggle to remain conscious.

And for the first time in two years, his son's arms wrapped around him.

The little boy buried his face against his father's jacket.

“Daddy…”

Damian closed his eyes.

That single word destroyed him.

Because he had almost forgotten what his son's voice sounded like.

Then Eli whispered something else.

Something that made Damian open his eyes.

“Daddy…”

The boy pointed toward the balcony.

“Bad man came because of Mommy.”

Damian slowly turned.

His expression hardened.

May you like

Mara's blood was still dripping onto the marble.

And somewhere above them, the gunman had vanished.
