Chapter 9 - PIECING THE TRUTH

Twenty minutes later, the storm began to clear, leaving behind a cold, crystalline stillness over the Aspen mountains.
In the driveway of the Sterling estate, three tactical vehicles sat with their engines idling.
Julian had secured Arthur Sterling in zip-ties, throwing the sobbing, ruined CFO into the back of a transport van. Viktor had been disarmed, bound, and loaded into a second vehicle under heavy guard.
Inside the primary SUV, the heater was blasting hot air.
Damian sat in the front seat, a paramedic bandaging his cut ribs while Mara sat beside him, clutching a hot thermos of tea.
Eli was sound asleep in the back row, wrapped in a warm blanket, safe from the cold and the horror that had unfolded on the mountain.
Mara looked at Damian’s pale, rigid face. She could tell something was deeply wrong. He hadn't spoken a word since he walked back out of the forest.
“Damian,” Mara said softly, placing her hand on his arm. “What happened out there? What did Viktor say to you?”
Damian took a slow, heavy breath. He handed a dark, encrypted flash drive—recovered from Sterling’s safe—to Julian, who was sitting in the driver's seat.
“Run the global financial registries,” Damian said, his voice completely hollow. “Look up Account 99-Alpha. The Eleanor Blackwood Revocable Trust.”
Julian’s fingers flew across his laptop keyboard. For three long minutes, the only sound in the car was the rapid clicking of keys.
Then, Julian stopped.
His eyes widened in absolute horror as he stared at the screen.
“Boss...” Julian whispered, his voice trembling. “This... this can't be right.”
“Read it,” Damian commanded flatly.
“The account was created five years ago,” Julian said, reading off the encrypted data. “It transferred over two hundred million dollars through weapons logistics firms in South America. But... Eleanor didn't sign these authorization forms.”
Mara leaned forward, her hazel eyes scanning the screen. “Look at the digital signature timestamp!” she gasped.
Damian turned his head. “What is it?”
“These signatures were executed using Eleanor’s personal biometric key,” Mara explained, her voice rising with sudden realization. “But Eleanor was in a medical clinic in Switzerland on those dates! I have her medical records from my sister’s research! She was undergoing treatment for her severe anemia!”
Julian tapped a few more keys, pulling up a secondary file hidden deep within the drive’s root directory.
“It’s a forge,” Julian declared, turning the laptop screen toward Damian. “Someone cloned Eleanor’s biometric key using her private desktop at the Blackwood estate. And look who authorized the secondary access.”
On the screen, a photo appeared alongside a corporate identity file.
It wasn't Eleanor. It wasn't Arthur Sterling.
It was Marcus Vance—Damian’s chief of global logistics, and Mara’s estranged uncle.
Mara gasped, dropping her thermos. “Uncle Marcus...”
“He used Eleanor’s name to set up the laundering ring,” Damian realized, the dark fog finally clearing from his mind. “He framed my dead wife so that if the DOJ ever investigated the foundation, all roads would lead to a dead woman who couldn't defend herself.”
“And when Eleanor started asking questions two years ago,” Mara added, tears of rage springing to her eyes, “Marcus realized she was about to discover he was stealing her identity. So he hired Vanguard to kill her, and he made sure my sister Clara disappeared when she found the forged signatures!”

Damian looked back at his sleeping son.
Eli wasn't the target because he was a witness to a murder. Eli was the target because Eleanor had left her true, original personal diary—containing the master encryption keys to her biometric data—inside his favorite stuffed animal, which the boy had carried everywhere since her death.
