Chapter 5 - The Secret Under the Rose

The panic room beneath Blackwood Ridge was a soundproof, concrete bunker equipped with independent air filtration, emergency lighting, and a bank of security monitors displaying every camera angle of the estate.

The heavy steel door sealed out the sounds of gunfire, leaving only the quiet, rhythmic hum of the air scrubbers and the heavy breathing of the three survivors.

Lucian leaned against the reinforced wall, his chest heaving, his gun still held low. He looked at Mara, who was sitting on a metal supply crate, her hands still locked around the empty revolver, her body shaking violently from adrenaline shock.

Bishop sat at her feet, pressing his heavy head against her bare knees, whining softly as he licked a tiny drop of blood from a glass scratch on her ankle.

Lucian slowly walked over, reached down, and gently pried her fingers away from the smoking cylinder of the gun. He set the weapon on a metal shelf, then knelt down on the cold concrete floor in front of her.

"That was... incredible," Lucian whispered, his storm-gray eyes glowing with genuine, unscripted admiration. "You took out three tactical operatives and my uncle with a light fixture."

Mara let out a breathless, half-hysterical laugh that quickly dissolved into a sob. She buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking.

"I almost died," she wept. "We almost died! Lucian, this is insane! I'm a waitress! I serve salads and bourbon! I don't shoot chandeliers!"

Lucian reached up, his long, warm hands gently taking her wrists, pulling her hands away from her face. His thumb brushed away the hot tears streaking through the soot on her cheeks.

"You're not just a waitress, Mara," Lucian said, his voice softer than she had ever heard it. "You're Elena’s sister. You have her fire. You have her courage."

Mara looked into his eyes, feeling the fierce, steady strength radiating from him. The fear that had consumed her since the Black Orchid began to recede, replaced by a strange, exhilarating heat that hummed through her veins.

"The secret," Mara whispered, her voice steadying.

Lucian stilled. "What?"

"The password," she said, looking down at Bishop, who thumped his tail once against the floor. "When Elena was brushing my hair before she died, she gave me a riddle. She said: 'The dog guards the rose, but the sister holds the thorns.'"

Lucian’s eyes narrowed in intense concentration. "The dog guards the rose... Bishop’s full kennel registry name is Black Rose Bishop. My father bought him from a breeder in Kentucky."

"And the thorns?" Mara asked.

Lucian stood up, stepping over to the bank of security monitors. He typed a quick series of commands into the central terminal, pulling up a digital schematic of the estate's grounds.

"The estate gardens," Lucian realized, pointing to a circular lawn on the north ridge. "Elena spent hours in the rose garden behind the old conservatory. She planted three hundred white rose bushes the summer before she died."

On the security monitors, they watched as Julian and the surviving Draven security team successfully cleared the upper floors of the estate. Victor’s remaining mercenaries were being rounded up and disarmed in the rain.

"Victor’s primary team is broken," Lucian noted, his face turning back to solid granite. "Julian has the house secured. We have an hour before the police chief arrives to pretend he was investigating a gas leak."

He turned back to Mara, holding out his hand.

"Let’s go find your sister’s thorns."
