Chapter 6 - The Rose Garden's Gift

The rain had softened into a cool, misting fog by the time they stepped out through the ruined conservatories behind the main house.

The smell of wet earth and crushed pine needles hung thick in the night air. Lucian walked with his gun unholstered, flanked by Julian and two heavily armed bodyguards. Bishop trotted ahead, his head low, his dark nose sweeping over the wet grass like a hound on a trail.

They reached the center of the white rose garden—a sunken stone patio surrounded by ancient, overgrown thorn bushes and crumbling marble statues.

Bishop stopped near a massive, weeping willow tree whose branches drooped into a circular bed of dark, crimson-flowered roses—the only red bushes in a sea of white.

The dog began to dig frantically, his heavy paws sending chunks of wet topsoil flying into the air.

"Bishop, hold," Lucian commanded quietly.

The dog stopped, but stayed on his knees, whining eagerly as he nudged a patch of dark earth near the tangled roots of the willow tree.

Julian stepped forward with a tactical spade, sinking the metal edge into the soil where the dog had indicated. Two feet down, the shovel hit something hard and metallic with a dull CLANG.

Julian reached into the muddy hole and hauled out a small, heavy iron box wrapped in thick, oil-slicked canvas.

Mara stepped forward, her heart hammering against her ribs like a sledgehammer. Lucian took the canvas off, revealing an antique, triple-bolted iron safe bearing the crest of the Draven family archivist.

On the front of the box was a digital keypad alongside a biometric thumbprint scanner.

"This is it," Lucian murmured, holding the heavy box in the beam of his flashlight. "The master archive."

He looked at Mara. "Put your thumb on the scanner."

Mara’s hand trembled as she reached out. She pressed her right thumb firmly against the cold glass of the biometric pad.

The pad flashed red once, twice... and then turned a solid, glowing green.

A electronic chime sounded, followed by the text display on the small screen: IDENTITY VERIFIED: MARA VALE. ENTER SECONDARY BINDING PHRASE.

Mara took a deep breath, looking down at Bishop, who leaned against her leg, giving her all his warmth and strength.

She leaned down toward the small microphone on the safe.

"The sister holds the thorns," she whispered clearly.

CLICK. CLACK. WHIRRRRR.

The three heavy iron bolts inside the box retracted simultaneously. The steel door sprang open with a quiet hiss of released vacuum pressure.

Inside lay three items:

First, a sleek, military-grade encrypted flash drive encased in titanium.

Second, a handwritten letter on yellowed paper addressed to Mara.

And third, a high-resolution photograph taken eight years ago inside a government facility, showing Victor Draven standing next to a high-ranking official from the United States Department of Justice, shaking hands over a signed contract.

Lucian pulled the photograph out first. His gray eyes swept over the document, and a terrifying, cold smile spread across his handsome face.

"It wasn't just the Russians," Lucian breathed, his voice rich with lethal revelation. "Victor wasn't just skimming money. He was selling out the entire Chicago underworld to a rogue federal taskforce so he could take full immunity and run the city as a government-backed monopoly."

Mara pulled out the handwritten letter from her sister. Her eyes teared up as she recognized Elena’s precise, beautiful handwriting:

My darling Mara,

If you are reading this, it means Bishop brought you home, and Lucian kept you safe. I am sorry I couldn't stay to see you grow up. Everything you need to destroy Victor and clean our family's name is on this drive. You are stronger than you know, little sister. Live a full life. Don't let the dark consume you.

All my love, Elena.

Mara held the letter to her chest, weeping softly in the cool rain.

Lucian stepped up behind her. He placed his large, warm hand on her shoulder, pulling her gently back against his chest.

"We have everything now," Lucian whispered into her dark hair. "The evidence, the bank accounts, the names of every crooked politician in Illinois. We can destroy him completely."

"He killed her," Mara whispered, her grief hardening into a sharp, icy rage. "He made her die alone in that house."

May you like

Lucian turned her around to face him, his hands cupping her cheeks, his gray eyes burning like molten silver.

"He will pay for every second of pain he caused your family, Mara," Lucian swore softly. "I give you my word as a Draven."
