Chapter 10 - The Dawn of the Empress

The sun rose over Lake Forest ten days later, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of gold, amber, and deep rose.
The autumn gale had passed, leaving behind a clean, crisp morning air that rustled the turning leaves across the eleven-acre estate. The political scandal had exploded across the front pages of every newspaper in the country: SENATOR GARCIA ARRESTED IN MASSIVE RACKETEERING RING; SYNDICATE KINGPIN PETROV FACES LIFE IN SUPERMAX.
Not a single newspaper printed Charlene's name. Dominic’s legal network had completely erased her past debts, her medical records under her maiden name, and her employment files. She was no longer Charlene Stewart, the maid who worked three jobs.
She was Charlene Hamilton.
In the master suite, the floor-to-ceiling windows were wide open, letting in the cool morning breeze.
Charlene stood near the glass, wearing a loose, comfortable white silk robe. Her hands rested over her nine-month belly—the baby was due in less than three weeks. Her skin was glowing, her dark eyes clear and filled with deep, unwavering peace.
A pair of strong, broad arms wrapped around her waist from behind.
Dominic leaned down, resting his chin on her shoulder, pressing a soft kiss against her neck. He smelled of fresh soap, cedarwood, and the crisp morning air.
"What are you thinking about?" he murmured softly, his large hands gently covering hers over her belly.
Charlene looked out over the sprawling estate—over the limestone terraces, the manicured gardens, and the tall iron gates standing open in the distance.
"I was thinking about fifty-one strokes on the newel post," she smiled gently.
Dominic chuckled—a deep, rich sound that vibrated against her back. "You never have to count strokes on a banister again, sweetheart."
"I know," she turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, looking into the dark eyes of the man who had torn down a political empire just to make her safe. "Where's Vincent?"
"Downstairs," Dominic smiled. "He's inspecting the new nursery furniture that arrived from Italy. He claims the crib railings aren't reinforced enough for a Hamilton child."
Charlene laughed—a bright, beautiful sound that filled the massive room with warmth.
Down below on the drive, a small black sedan pulled up to the front entrance. Mrs. Gable stepped out onto the porch, flanked by two new housekeeping staff members—young women hired under strict, generous labor contracts established personally by Charlene.
Mrs. Gable looked up toward the third-floor balcony, saw Charlene standing beside Dominic, and bowed her head in deep, genuine respect.
Charlene nodded back—not as a servant bowing to a master, nor as an arrogant ruler looking down on subjects, but as a woman who understood the dignity of every person who walked through her doors.
Dominic pulled her closer, pressing his forehead against hers, his thumb stroking her jawline.
"No more secrets," he whispered against her lips. "No more aprons. No more hiding."

"No more hiding," Charlene agreed, closing her eyes as his lips met hers in a long, sweet, possessive kiss under the morning sun.
Outside, the gates of the estate stood tall and secure, guarding the home of a man who ruled a city, and the woman who ruled his heart.
