Chapter 8 - The Grand Entry

The grand ballroom of the Hamilton estate was a swirling sea of wealth, power, and hidden danger.
Over two hundred people filled the massive room—corrupt politicians in expensive suits, high-society socialites dripping in emeralds, international logistics brokers, and hardened syndicate bosses who controlled the illegal trade routes from Montreal to the Gulf Coast.
Near the champagne fountain stood Senator Richard Garcia, holding a glass of scotch, his face tight with suppressed anxiety. Beside him stood Bethany, wearing a bright scarlet dress that screamed for attention. She was looking around the room with sharp, victorious eyes, believing that her presence at the gala proved her family was still in control.
In the corner booth sat Nikolai Petrov—a thick-set Russian man in his fifties with a scarred neck, cold blue eyes, and teeth capped in silver. He was surrounded by his lieutenants, sipping vodka and whispering in low, guttural Russian.
Opposite them stood Liam O'Rourke, the towering, red-haired chief of the Irish mob, flanked by his brothers, watching the room like a hawk waiting for prey.
Suddenly, the brass orchestra near the stage stopped playing mid-note.
At the top of the grand marble staircase, two large wooden doors swung open.
Vincent Moretti stepped out first, standing at attention beside the railing.
Then, Dominic Hamilton walked into the light.
A murmur swept through the crowd as the guests turned their heads toward the stairwell. But the murmur turned into an absolute, suffocating silence as the crowd saw the woman walking on Dominic's arm.
Charlene moved down the stairs with effortless, regal grace. Her midnight-blue velvet dress caught the warm light of the crystal chandeliers, the two-million-dollar diamond necklace glittering against her skin. Her hair fell in smooth dark waves, her chin held high, her face radiant and unblemished. Her hand rested possessively over her seven-month pregnant belly.
Dominic walked beside her, his hand resting firmly over hers, his eyes sweeping across the ballroom like a king inspecting his court.
Down near the champagne fountain, Bethany Garcia's glass slipped from her fingers.
CRASH.
The glass shattered against the floor, spraying expensive champagne over her red dress, but Bethany didn't even notice. She stared up at the stairs, her eyes wide, her mouth opening and closing in mute, hysterical horror.
"No..." Bethany whispered, her voice cracking. "No... that's... that's the maid..."
Senator Garcia's face drained of every drop of color. He looked from Charlene to Dominic, realizing in a single, terrifying flash of insight that his political leverage had just been utterly pulverized.
Dominic and Charlene reached the foot of the staircase. The crowd parted instantly, creating a wide, respectful path for them as they walked toward the center of the ballroom.
Liam O'Rourke stepped forward, a broad, booming smile breaking across his weathered Irish face. He raised his glass high into the air.
"To Dominic Hamilton!" O'Rourke bellowed, his deep voice echoing off the high ceilings. "And to his beautiful wife, Charlene! May the Hamilton bloodline rule Chicago for a hundred years!"
Gasping shock rippled through the room.
Wife.
Bethany Garcia stumbled back against a pillar, clutching her throat as if she couldn't breathe. "Wife?! She's a maid! She's a filthy maid!"
Dominic stopped in the center of the room. He turned slowly, his dark eyes locking directly onto Bethany and her father.

He raised his glass slightly.
"My wife," Dominic announced, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the ballroom, "does not clean houses anymore. She owns them."
