Chapter 6 - The Federal Net

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DON'T MOVE!"
A dozen tactical operators clad in dark body armor marked with big yellow FBI and SEC letters poured into my apartment, their assault rifles raised and locked onto Harold's bodyguards in the hallway.
Before Harold’s men could even reach beneath their jackets, they were thrown against the hallway walls, stripped of their weapons, and forced onto their knees in handcuffs.
"DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!" an agent barked, rushing into my living room.
Harold Carter—the billionaire real estate mogul who had ruled Manhattan for forty years—stumbled backward, his hands flying into the air as three federal agents tackled him against my dining table. His gold fountain pen clattered across the floor, sliding beneath the sofa.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Harold shrieked, his voice cracking with absolute panic as his cheek was pressed hard against his own leather briefcase. "I am Harold Carter! Call Director Vance immediately! You have no right—!"
"Harold Carter," a tall, sharp-featured woman in an ironed suit stepped into the room, holding a federal arrest warrant. "I am Special Agent Ramirez with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Public Corruption and Financial Crimes Unit. You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit money laundering, wire fraud, racketeering, and witness intimidation."
"This is an outrage!" Harold roared, his expensive hair wild and unkempt as they hauled him to his feet, pulling his arms behind his back in heavy steel cuffs. "This woman is insane! She's attempting to extort my family!"
Agent Ramirez didn't even look at him. She walked over to my desk, looked down at my laptop, and then extended her hand to me.
"Ms. Bennett," Agent Ramirez said respectfully. "Your uncle called our field office twenty minutes ago with your emergency filing. The Treasury Department has been trying to build a case against Vanguard Shoreline Holdings for eighteen months. The ledgers your mother-in-law provided were the missing link."
"Where is my sister?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly as the adrenaline began to clear from my blood.
"Agents secured Emily ten minutes ago," Ramirez assured me. "She’s completely safe, sitting in an armored vehicle downstairs under federal guard."
I let out a long, shuddering breath, feeling the crushing weight lifted off my chest.
Harold was being dragged toward the door by two agents, but as he reached the threshold, he twisted his body around, his bloodshot eyes locking onto mine with desperate, murderous rage.
"You think you've won, you little bitch?!" Harold spat, blood bubbling on his lip. "My legal team will have me out on bail before lunch! Every contract, every wire transfer bears Daniel’s signature! If I go down, your precious new husband goes down with me! He’ll spend thirty years in a federal penitentiary!"

I stood straight, crossing my arms over my chest, looking down at him with utter detachment.
"Good," I said coldly. "He can use the time to think about his wedding night."
