Chapter 7 - The Collapse

By noon, the news broke across every major financial network in the world.
CARTER GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT RAIDED BY FBI; BILLIONAIRE HAROLD CARTER ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR MONEY LAUNDERING SCHEME.
The stock price of Carter Global Development collapsed by seventy-four percent within two hours of the opening bell. Federal marshals posted asset seizure notices on the doors of the Carter Tower, freezing over forty corporate bank accounts and impounding three private jets registered to shell companies in Delaware.
I sat in the office of Special Agent Ramirez at the FBI’s Lower Manhattan field station, sipping warm tea from a paper cup. Sitting beside me was Evelyn Carter, wrapped in a blanket, a fresh bandage covering her fractured cheekbone. Sarah Vance sat on my other side, managing the legal documentation.
"We picked up Daniel Carter two hours ago at his medical clinic in Midtown," Agent Ramirez informed us, dropping a thick folder onto her desk. "His thumb was set, but he was taken into custody without incident."
Evelyn winced slightly, a tear trickling down her bruised cheek. "Is he... is he facing prison time, Agent?"
Ramirez looked at Evelyn with a solemn expression. "Mrs. Carter, your son signed over forty fraudulent wire transfers as Vice President of Development. He was personally receiving two hundred thousand dollars a month in kickbacks through an off-book account in the Cayman Islands. He is facing up to twenty-five years in federal prison."
Evelyn lowered her head, weeping silently. I reached over, wrapping my arm around her frail shoulders.
"He made his choice, Evelyn," I said softly. "He chose to follow his father's path. He chose to abuse you, and he chose to strike me."
"I know..." Evelyn sobbed, wiping her face with a tissue. "I just... I wish I had been stronger years ago. If I had stopped Harold thirty years ago, maybe Daniel wouldn't have turned into a monster."
"You couldn't have stopped him alone," I told her firmly. "Harold built a system designed to keep you trapped. But it's over now. Neither of them will ever hurt you again."
Agent Ramirez turned her screen toward us. "Ms. Bennett, because you provided critical whistleblower testimony prior to signing any postnuptial agreement, you are entirely protected under federal whistleblower statutes. You are also entitled to a statutory reward—up to fifteen percent of the total assets recovered by the federal government from Carter Global Development."
Sarah leaned forward, a sharp, victorious smile on her face. "Fifteen percent of a three-billion-dollar forfeiture, Claire. That’s tens of millions of dollars."
I looked at the screen, at the cold numbers and legal seals, feeling no sense of triumph—only a quiet, profound sense of relief.
"I don't care about the money, Sarah," I said honestly. "I just want this marriage dissolved, my name cleared, and Evelyn secured for the rest of her life."
"Speaking of the marriage," Sarah pulled a thick stack of legal papers from her briefcase and laid them on the desk before me. "These are emergency annulment papers based on fraud, physical assault, and criminal concealment. The domestic violence report and the federal indictment give us ironclad grounds. A judge will sign this before sunset today."
I took the pen from Sarah's hand.

Without a single second of hesitation, I signed my name at the bottom of the page: Claire Bennett.
Not Claire Carter. Never Claire Carter.
