Chapter 10 - REBIRTH

Six months later.
The morning sun broke over the Chicago skyline, casting a golden glow across the shimmering blue waters of Lake Michigan.
I stood on the expansive stone balcony of my new penthouse on Michigan Avenue—a space I had bought and designed entirely on my own terms.
The scar behind my left ear had faded to a fine, barely visible white line. My hair had grown back into a short, chic pixie cut. I had never felt more energetic, more focused, or more alive.
My iPad chimed on the patio table.
It was a news alert from the Chicago Tribune:
FORMER CHICAGO CONSULTANT ALEJANDRO GOMEZ SENTENCED TO 9 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR EMBEZZLEMENT AND WIRE FRAUD.
I read the headline once, felt a brief wave of quiet resolution, and closed the app.
The past was officially closed. The debt had been paid in full.
My legal team had successfully recovered over ninety percent of the stolen funds from the frozen crypto accounts and the sale of the Cabo condo. Every single penny recovered was donated directly to the Camila Vance Brain Tumor Research Initiative at Northwestern University, funding advanced surgical equipment and grants for low-income patients facing critical surgeries.
Arthur Pendelton walked out onto the balcony, holding two cups of fresh coffee and a leather portfolio containing the quarterly reports for Vance Commercial Real Estate.
“Good morning, Camila,” Arthur said, handing me a cup. “The board meeting starts in an hour. We just finalized the acquisition of the new logistics park in O’Hare.”
“Thank you, Arthur,” I said, taking a sip of the warm coffee.
“How are you feeling today?” he asked softly, looking at me with genuine care.
I turned my head toward the bright morning sun, feeling the warm breeze against my skin, hearing the vibrant hum of the city below me.
Fifteen years ago, I had allowed myself to be defined by a man who saw me only as a bank account. Six months ago, I had laid on an operating table facing death, while the people I trusted most prepared to dance on my grave.
May you like
But I had survived. I had reclaimed my life, my name, my fortune, and my sovereignty.
“I feel wonderful, Arthur,” I said with a genuine, brilliant smile. “Let’s go to the board meeting. We have a empire to build.”
