Chapter 8 - THE TRAP IS SPRUNG

Three days later, Alejandro was sitting in a cramped, dark booth at a dingy tavern on the south side of Chicago.

He was drinking cheap draft beer, wearing a stained baseball cap pulled low over his face to avoid being recognized by his former high-society peers.

He was desperate. His boutique firm had collapsed. His credit was shot. Claudia had packed her bags and vanished three days ago after he tried to kick her out, taking their son with her.

His only hope was the Cabo San Lucas condo. He had purchased it two years ago with stolen trust funds as his ultimate escape hatch. He decided he would sell the condo under the market rate, cash out his $1.5 million in crypto, and flee to South America before Camila’s lawyers completely ruined him.

He pulled out his laptop, logged onto his offshore crypto exchange account, and entered his authorization key to liquidate his holdings into US dollars.

The screen flickered. A red alert box popped up across the screen:

ACCOUNT FROZEN BY FEDERAL COURT ORDER (INJUNCTION #2026-CV-8849). CONTACT THE U.S. MARSHALS SERVICE FOR INQUIRIES.

Alejandro’s heart stopped beating. Panic spiked in his chest like an electric shock.

“No, no, no!” he whimpered, slamming his hand onto the sticky wooden table.

He frantically opened his real estate portal to check the status of his Mexican property listing.

Another legal notification appeared via email from his Mexican real estate attorney:

“Mr. Gomez/Vance: Please be advised that the High Court of Quintana Roo, enforcing an international asset recovery injunction filed by Thorne & Associates on behalf of Vance Holdings LLC, has placed a legal lien on the Cabo property. The property title is locked pending fraud adjudication.”

Alejandro slammed the laptop shut. He was suffocating. His secret fortune—his $5 million safety net—had been completely wiped out in a matter of seconds.

He grabbed his phone and frantically dialed his criminal defense lawyer, standard legal counsel he had retained using his last few hundred dollars.

“Frank! Frank, you have to help me!” Alejandro screamed into the phone, staggering out of the tavern into the cold rain. “They froze my crypto! They locked my condo in Mexico! Camila is destroying me!”

“Alejandro, shut up and listen to me,” Frank’s voice came back, flat and intensely grim.

“What?”

“Where are you right now?” Frank asked.

“I’m outside a bar on 35th Street! Why?”

“Do not go back to your hotel,” Frank warned. “Two hours ago, the federal prosecutor’s office unsealed a twelve-count indictment against you for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and tax evasion. The arrest warrant has already been signed by a judge.”

Alejandro’s legs went completely weak. He had to lean his back against the brick wall of the tavern to keep from collapsing onto the wet pavement.

“An... an arrest warrant?” he stammered, tears blunting his vision. “Frank, you have to fix this! Talk to Camila! Tell her I’ll sign whatever she wants! Tell her I’ll give her everything back!”

“Alejandro, you don't understand,” Frank said with a heavy sigh. “Camila Vance isn't negotiating. She spent three years letting you dig your own grave, and now she’s handing the shovel to the federal government. Turn yourself in, Alejandro. It’s over.”

The phone went silent as Frank hung up.

Alejandro dropped the phone onto the wet sidewalk. He stood in the falling rain, listening to the distant sound of police sirens wailing across the city, realizing that the woman he had treated like a dying, weak victim had just destroyed him with surgical precision.
