Chapter 10 - The Salt Line Reborn

Six months later.

The ocean air blowing off Boston Harbor was warm and smelled of salt, pine, and blooming spring flowers.

The building that had once housed The Salt Line had undergone a complete, breathtaking transformation. The cold marble floors and harsh modern decor were gone, replaced by rich mahogany woodwork, warm amber lanterns, and large, open-air windows that offered sweeping views of the blue bay.

The sign above the brass-trimmed entrance read: The Donovan.

It was no longer an exclusive playground for corrupt politicians and mob bosses. It was the premier family restaurant in South Boston, known across the state for its incredible seafood, warm atmosphere, and generous community outreach programs that provided free meals and medical assistance to struggling families across the city.

Mave Donovan didn't wear a scuffed, black waitress uniform anymore.

She stood near the host stand wearing a tailored navy silk dress, her dark hair pinned up softly, her skin radiant, healthy, and glowing with happiness. She was the full owner and manager of The Donovan, a gift given to her by Rafe on her twenty-eighth birthday—bought, renovated, and deeded entirely in her name.

Behind the counter, Mrs. Gable was laughing as she arranged fresh flowers in crystal vases, while Sienna worked at the dessert station, decorating a three-tiered chocolate cake for an evening birthday party.

Out on the sunlit patio, nine-year-old Finn was running across the grass, kicking a leather soccer ball with full, vigorous energy, his laughter ringing bright and clear over the sound of the ocean waves. His heart was strong, his cheeks rosy with vibrant health.

The heavy oak front door chimed softly.

Rafe Colazo walked into the restaurant. He wore a crisp dark suit without a tie, looking relaxed, powerful, and utterly transformed. The terrifying, cold shadow that had ruled his face for fifteen years had been completely replaced by a quiet, profound contentment.

He crossed the room, his eyes fixed entirely on Mave.

"How is the lunch rush coming, owner?" Rafe asked, a rare, warm smile touching his sharp lips as he stepped close to her, his hands coming to rest gently around her waist.

"We are booked solid through Sunday, Mr. Colazo," Mave laughed softly, reaching up to wrap her arms around his neck, leaning her head against his broad chest. "Though I hear the owner is very selective about who gets a table near the window."

Rafe leaned down, pressing his lips softly against hers in a long, sweet kiss that tasted of spring and absolute peace.

"I don't need a table near the window," Rafe whispered into her hair, his arms tightening around her small, strong frame. "I already have everything I ever wanted right here."

Out on the patio, Finn kicked the soccer ball high into the warm afternoon sky, his joyful shout echoing over the calm waters of Boston Harbor—a sound that proved, once and for all, that even in the darkest, coldest corners of the world, love and courage could rebuild any broken life.
