Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Grace

Over the next four days, the Colazo estate became a sanctuary the likes of which Mave Donovan had never imagined in her wildest dreams.
Her shoulder began to heal rapidly under the care of Dr. Vance and his nursing team. Finn spent his days exploring the massive gardens with Sienna, who treated the little boy like her own younger brother, teaching him how to feed the koi fish in the courtyard pond and baking cookies with Mrs. Gable in the sprawling main kitchen.
For the first time in nine years, Mave didn't wake up at 5:00 a.m. to the sound of screaming alarm clocks or pressing debt collectors. She didn't have to count quarters to buy milk or worry about whether her apartment heat would be turned off before the weekend.
Every evening at seven o'clock, Rafe Colazo walked into her suite.
He didn't bring his empire with him. He left his guns, his bodyguards, and his dark, bloody business outside the door. He sat in the velvet armchair beside her bed, and for two hours, the most feared man in Boston listened to a former waitress talk about her childhood, her love for old books, and her dreams of one day opening a small bakery near the ocean.
In turn, Rafe told her things he had never spoken aloud to a single human being—about the pressure of inheriting a criminal legacy at twenty-one, the burden of protecting his family from wolves on every side, and the profound, suffocating loneliness that had consumed his soul until the night she jumped in front of a steel baton at The Salt Line.
"Why didn't you run, Mave?" Rafe asked her on the fourth night, his dark eyes studying her profile in the warm lamplight. "When you saw that man coming with the baton... why didn't you step back?"
Mave looked down at her scraped, calloused fingers, then looked over at the doorway where Finn’s laughter echoed faintly from the hallway.
"When you spent years watching the person you love most in the world fight for every breath," Mave said softly, her voice filled with a quiet, unbreakable steel, "you realize that life isn't about saving yourself. It's about making sure the people who need protection don't have to stand alone. I saw a girl who was about to be hurt. I had the body to take it. So I took it."
Rafe sat completely still. He looked at this fragile, beautiful woman who had been ground down by poverty, exhaustion, and tragedy, yet carried a heart so fierce and pure that it had shattered his entire world view in a single instant.
Slowly, carefully, Rafe reached out his large, scarred hand, resting it over her small, bruised fingers. His touch was shockingly gentle, reverent, and devoid of any violence.

"You will never stand alone again, Mave," Rafe murmured, his winter-blue eyes burning into hers with a absolute, unshakeable devotion. "I give you my word as a Colazo. As long as I draw breath, no one in this city will ever make you feel small again."
Mave looked at their joined hands, feeling a deep, electric warmth spread from his fingers straight to her chest—a feeling she realized, with a sudden, beautiful panic, was love.
