Chapter 9 - The New Reign

Three months later.

The Valente estate was bathed in the warm, brilliant light of an early summer afternoon. The formal rose gardens, which had been torn apart by gunfire during the winter siege, were now in full bloom—vibrant red and white roses filling the air with a sweet, rich fragrance.

The heavy front gates of the mansion stood open, guarded by six sharply dressed men who bowed respectfully as a convoy of polished black sedans pulled smoothly into the circular driveway.

Inside the grand foyer, the domestic staff was assembled in two immaculate lines.

At the front of the staff stood Mrs. Gable, who had returned for the special occasion, wearing her finest silk dress. Beside her were the cooks, the footmen, and the maids—all standing with their posture straight, their faces filled with genuine, joyful anticipation.

The heavy double front doors swung open.

Dante Valente walked into the foyer. He wore a bespoke dark grey suit, his posture tall, imposing, and regal. But his face—the face that had once been carved from cold stone—held a soft, relaxed warmth that everyone in the household had come to recognize over the past ninety days.

In his left arm, Dante was carrying four-year-old Rosie.

She wore a bright yellow dress with lace trim, her dark curls styled neatly with a golden ribbon. In her small hands, she held a brand-new stuffed rabbit—a gift from Dante that possessed two intact, floppy ears.

Beside Dante, her hand tucked securely into the crook of his right arm, was Clare.

She was stunning. She wore a floor-length dress of deep midnight blue silk that flowed around her legs like liquid night. Her hair was styled in an elegant, sweeping updo, and around her neck hung a breathtaking necklace of square-cut diamonds—a gift from the Valente vault.

On the ring finger of her left hand sat a massive, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the light of the crystal chandelier, sparkling brilliantly for all to see.

The staff bowed deeply as the three of them stepped onto the marble floor.

"Welcome home, Don Dante, Mrs. Valente," Mrs. Gable announced, her voice trembling slightly with genuine emotion.

Clare smiled warmly at the assembled staff. "Thank you, Mrs. Gable. Everything looks beautiful."

Dante set Rosie down on the polished floor. The little girl immediately ran over to Mrs. Gable, holding up her new stuffed rabbit. "Look, Mrs. Gable! Barnaby got a brother! His name is Sir Fluffy!"

Even the sour old housekeeper couldn't suppress a soft chuckle, kneeling down to admire the toy. "He is very handsome, Miss Rosie."

Dante turned to Clare, pulling her gently against his side, his large hand resting affectionately against her hip. He looked down at her with an expression of absolute, unshakeable devotion that was visible to every person in the room.

The news of Dante Valente’s marriage to Clare Bennett had sent shockwaves through the syndicate three weeks ago. The other families had expected the Don to seek another political alliance—a daughter of a European don or a powerful cartel heiress.

Instead, Dante had brought his whole family to the grand cathedral in Manhattan, standing before five hundred syndicate bosses, diplomats, and law enforcement officials, putting a ring on the finger of the woman who had entered his house as an assistant housekeeper.

There were no objections. There were no whispers of weakness. Because everyone in the city knew what had happened to the Moretti family and the Philadelphia syndicate when they tried to touch Dante’s house.

Clare Bennett was not just Dante Valente’s wife. She was the protected Queen of the Valente empire.

"Are you happy, Clare?" Dante murmured into her ear, his breath warm against her skin.

Clare looked around the magnificent foyer—the warm sunlight streaming through the clean glass, the smiling faces of the staff, and her daughter laughing near the grand staircase.

She lifted her head, looking into the dark amber eyes of the man who had become her protector, her husband, and her heart.

"I am completely happy, Dante," Clare answered softly.

Dante smiled—a real, breathtaking smile that transformed his sharp features into something boyish and wonderfully handsome. He leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a slow, deep kiss that echoed through the grand hall, sealing their love in front of the whole world.
