Chapter 10 - The Dragon's Keep

That night, the mansion settled into a quiet, peaceful rhythm.
The summer breeze drifted through the open double doors of the second-floor master suite, carrying the faint scent of roses and night-blooming jasmine into the warm room.
In the adjoining nursery, Clare sat beside Rosie’s bed, reading the final pages of a storybook about a brave knight and a gentle dragon. Rosie’s eyelids were heavy, her small breathing slow and rhythmic as she clutched Sir Fluffy against her chest.
"Mama?" Rosie sleepy whispered, her eyes almost closed.
"Yes, my heart?" Clare whispered back, brushing a soft curl off her daughter's forehead.
"Is Daddy going to stay forever?"
Clare’s heart filled with an overwhelming, radiant warmth at the word Daddy—a word Rosie had started using naturally a month ago, a word that caused the formidable Dante Valente to stop whatever he was doing every single time he heard it.
"Yes, sweetheart," Clare said gently, kissing Rosie’s temple. "Daddy is going to stay forever. He's not going anywhere."
"Good," Rosie murmured, her small face relaxing into a peaceful smile. "Because dragons don't leave their castle."
Within two minutes, the little girl was fast asleep, breathing softly in the quiet night.
Clare stood up, carefully pulling the soft linen blanket over Rosie’s shoulders, before quietly stepping out of the nursery and closing the door behind her.
In the master living room, Dante stood on the balcony, looking out over the dark oak woods stretching toward the distant horizon. He had removed his formal jacket and tie, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his hands resting on the stone balustrade.
Clare walked across the room, stepping out onto the cool balcony beside him.
The night air was sweet and mild. Below, in the gardens, a few security floodlights illuminated the stone paths, but the atmosphere was devoid of tension. The guards moved with easy confidence—not as men waiting for war, but as men guarding a home that was truly at peace.
Clare leaned her head against Dante’s shoulder, wrapping her arms around his waist.
Dante immediately shifted, opening his arm to pull her flush against his chest, holding her tight against the cool night air. He rested his chin against the top of her head, his fingers tracing slow, hypnotic circles against her waist.
"She called you Daddy tonight," Clare whispered softly against his shirt.
Dante went completely motionless for a brief second. A deep, unsteady breath escaped his chest, his grip around her waist tightening imperceptibly.
"Did she?" Dante asked, his voice low and raspy with suppressed emotion.
"She asked if Daddy was going to stay forever," Clare smiled, looking up into his dark face. "I told her you were."
Dante looked down at her, his dark amber eyes shining beneath the starlight. He reached up, his long fingers gently caressing her cheek, his thumb brushing over her lips.
"She was right, you know," Dante murmured, his voice rich, warm, and overflowing with love. "The day she drew that dragon for me in the drawing room... I thought I was a dead man walking through a dead house. I had built walls so high nobody could touch me. I thought power was the only thing worth holding onto."
He leaned down, resting his forehead against hers, their breath mingling in the cool night air.
"And then a brave woman stood up to a tyrant to protect her child," Dante continued softly. "And she walked straight into my heart without making a sound on the marble."
Clare reached up, her hand gently touching the scarred skin of his cheek, her thumb tracing his lower lip. "You saved us, Dante."
"No, Clare," Dante corrected gently, pressing his lips to hers in a tender, lingering kiss that tasted of love, devotion, and new beginnings. "You and Rosie saved me."

They stood together on the high balcony of the Valente estate, wrapped in each other's arms, looking out over the peaceful grounds.
The housekeeper's daughter had found her home, the silent child had found her voice, and the most feared man in the mansion had finally found something far greater than power: a family that loved him, a castle to protect, and a dragon’s keep that would stand strong for the rest of their lives.
