Chapter 6 - The Shadow over Boston

By the following week, the atmosphere within the Vitali estate had transformed completely.

The lingering sense of defeat that had hung over the compound for months was gone, replaced by a sharp, electric energy. Gideon had summoned his regional captains to a private summit in the estate's grand ballroom, revealing his fully restored sight and executing a total restructuring of the family's assets.

Vincent Vitali was given direct control over the North End shipping security, his fiery temper channelled into defending the family's perimeter, while Marco assumed full operational command of all tactical personnel.

I no longer wore the charcoal maid's uniform.

Gideon had hired a top tailor from Newbury Street to fit me with elegant, dark wool trousers, silk blouses, and a tailored black blazer. I sat beside him at every meeting, carrying my leather notebook, managing his private communications and analyzing the financial movements of our rival networks.

To the outside world, I was his chief of staff.

To the men in the family, I was the woman who had saved the boss's life.

On a cold, crisp Tuesday evening, Gideon and I sat in his private third-floor study, looking over a map of Boston Harbor laid out on the mahogany table.

"Dominic Moretti knows Vance and Julian are gone," I said, pointing a gold pen at Terminal Four on the map. "His financial pipelines out of Providence have frozen. He is going to react, Gideon. A man like Moretti doesn't lose a five-million-dollar plot without trying to burn down the house."

Gideon stood behind my chair, leaning down over my shoulder, his hands resting on the edge of the table. His close proximity sent a pleasant warmth radiating through my clothes.

"Let him try," Gideon murmured, his breath brushing against my ear. "We have seized Julian's private accounts. We now own fifty-one percent of the holding company that controls Moretti's primary fuel docks in Rhode Island. By Friday, he won't have enough liquid capital to pay his own guards."

I turned my head to look at him, our faces only inches apart. "You're enjoying this."

Gideon offered a soft, rare smile that lit up his pale green eyes. "I am enjoying having my life back, Clara. And I am enjoying having you by my side to share it."

He reached out, his long fingers gently cupping my jaw, his thumb brushing over my lower lip.

"When you knocked that glass out of my hand nine days ago," Gideon whispered, his voice thick with emotion, "I thought you were just another servant making a mistake. I had no idea you were going to save my soul."

"I was just doing what was right, Gideon," I murmured, my heart pounding against my ribs as I looked into his eyes.

"No," Gideon said softly, leaning down closer. "You were meant to be here. With me."

He pressed his lips to mine—a slow, deep, possessive kiss that made the rest of the world vanish into thin air. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, melting into the heat and strength of the most powerful man in Boston.

When he finally pulled back, his pale green eyes were glowing with a fierce, absolute devotion.

"I am going to take care of you for the rest of your life, Clara," Gideon promised softly. "No more maid's uniforms. No more scrubbing floors. You are part of this house now."

Before I could answer, the red emergency phone on the desk rang loudly, shattering the quiet atmosphere of the room.

Gideon picked up the receiver instantly, his face turning back into a hard, rigid mask. "Talk to me, Marco."

"Boss, we have a problem at the South Boston warehouse," Marco's tense voice crackled over the speaker. "Vincent went down there with four guys to check on a delayed shipment of electronics. Moretti's heavy team ambushed them. They've pinned Vincent inside the lower office, and they're setting fire to the building."

Gideon's grip on the receiver tightened until his knuckles turned white. "Is Moretti there?"

"Yeah," Marco replied. "Witnesses saw his silver Mercedes outside the gate. He brought twenty men. He's trying to wipe out Vincent before we can reinforce."

Gideon looked at me, his eyes flashing with lethal fury.

"Assemble the heavy response team, Marco," Gideon commanded coldly. "We're going to South Boston. And we are not leaving any of Moretti's men alive."
