Chapter 9 - The New Dawn

Three months later.

Spring had arrived in Boston. The bitter rain and snow of winter had given way to soft, warm breezes that blew off the harbor, bringing the sweet scent of blooming cherry blossoms into the gardens of the Brookline estate.

The estate had been completely renovated. The dark, gloomy drapes had been removed, replaced by sheer white linen that allowed the golden morning sunlight to flood every corridor and room.

In the grand library, the mahogany table was set for a festive family breakfast.

Marco, Vincent, and several senior captains sat around the table, laughing and enjoying fresh pastries and coffee. Vincent was fully recovered from his injuries, his loud, boisterous energy returning to the house.

At the head of the table sat Gideon Vitali, looking handsome and powerful in a light grey tailored suit. His pale green eyes were clear, bright, and filled with life.

I walked into the room wearing an elegant cream-colored silk dress, my platinum green diamond ring sparkling on my hand.

Gideon stood up instantly, stepping over to meet me at the threshold. He wrapped his arm around my waist, kissing my lips gently in front of everyone.

"Good morning, my love," Gideon murmured softly.

"Good morning, husband," I smiled, leaning into his touch.

The captains cheered and raised their coffee cups in a toast.

"To the boss and the boss's boss!" Vincent shouted with a grin, making the room erupt into warm laughter.

Gideon laughed—a genuine, happy sound that echoes through the sunlit room—and pulled me toward his seat at the head of the table.

As I sat beside him, looking out at the beautiful, peaceful garden through the clear glass windows, I thought back to that cold October morning six months ago.

I had been a nameless maid on my knees, surrounding myself with broken crystal and facing the threat of death.

I had knocked a glass of poisoned whiskey from the hand of the most feared man in Boston, not knowing that in that single, terrifying second, I was breaking the chains of darkness that bound us both.
