Chapter 5 - The Midnight Counsel

The line connected on the second ring.
A crisp, sharp female voice answered immediately, completely alert despite the hour: "Vance Estate Legal, Sarah Sterling speaking."
"Sarah..." I whispered into the receiver, my voice trembling with exhaustion and pain. "It’s Camille. Camille Arden."
A sudden, sharp intake of breath came over the satellite line.
"Camille? Where are you calling from?" Sarah demanded, her tone shifting instantly into sharp professional focus. "I’ve been trying to reach your mobile phone for four hours. Grant told my office you were resting in intensive care after your femur surgery and couldn't take calls."
"Grant lied to you, Sarah," I choked out, tears running down my dusty cheeks. "He and Lenora locked me in the garage eleven minutes after I was discharged from the hospital."
Silence hung over the line for three terrifying seconds.
"Say that again, Camille," Sarah ordered, her voice turning into pure ice.
"They kicked my crutch out from under me in the foyer," I sobbed quietly into the receiver. "They dragged me down the hall, threw me onto the garage concrete, took my phone, my pain medication, and my antibiotics. They are trying to force me to sign a power of attorney form so they can mortgage the house for three million dollars by Friday."
Over the line, I heard the sudden, sharp sound of paper rustling and keys clanking against a desk.
"Are you injured?" Sarah asked, her tone deadly serious.
"My leg... the brace twisted when I fell," I said. "The pain is terrible, Sarah. I can't stand up."
"Camille, listen to me very carefully," Sarah said smoothly. "Did you open the lower vault beneath the workbench?"
"Yes. I have Ruth’s letter, the ledger, and the satellite phone."
"Good," Sarah said. "Then you hold every piece of leverage in New York State. Do not sign anything they put in front of you. Do you hear me? Not a single letter."
"I won't," I promised.
"I am activating the Arden Trust emergency protocols right now," Sarah explained rapidly. "Ruth established a private security detail and a high-tier medical transport team through Vance Corporate Protection. They are located fifteen minutes from your neighborhood."
"Can you send them here?"
"They are already moving," Sarah affirmed. "In addition, I am filing an emergency injunction in Manhattan Supreme Court at 8:00 AM tomorrow morning, freezing every personal and corporate account associated with Grant Ellery and Lenora Ellery."
"Grant said his firm needs three million dollars by Friday," I added.
Sarah let out a sharp, cold laugh over the speaker.
"Grant’s firm is Ellery & Vance Capital," Sarah said. "What Grant doesn't know is that the Arden Trust owns sixty-two percent of his firm’s commercial debt notes. By 9:00 AM tomorrow, I will call in those notes for immediate liquidation. By noon, Grant won't just be broke, Camille. He will be facing criminal charges for corporate fraud and elder abuse."
A heavy thud echoed from the ceiling above the garage.
Lenora’s voice screamed from the kitchen upstairs: “Grant! Where is the secondary deed file?! Why isn't it in her desk?!”
"They’re tearing my house apart, Sarah," I whispered, looking up at the ceiling.
"Let them tear it apart, Camille," Sarah replied softly. "Every picture frame they break, every drawer they force open, adds another felony count to their indictment. Stay down, keep the satellite phone hidden, and wait for my signal."

"How long?" I asked.
"Ten minutes, Camille," Sarah said. "Hold on for ten more minutes."
