Chapter 3 - The Rescue and the Arrest

The passage was barely wide enough for a grown man, but Julian dragged himself through the dust and cold brick until his hands reached the boy. He pulled Oliver into his arms with a desperate, crushing intensity, burying his face in the child’s matted hair.

Oliver was trembling violently, his skin ice-cold to the touch, his body so light it felt as though he had lost half his weight in five days.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Julian wept openly, pressing kisses to the boy’s forehead, his cheeks, his small dirty hands. "I'm so sorry, Oliver. Daddy's here. I've got you. I've got you."

"She said... she said you didn't want me anymore," Oliver sobbed weakly, clutching at his father’s lapels with frail, trembling fingers. "She said I was bad... like Mommy was bad before she went away. She said if I made a noise, she’d put me in the deep hole under the conservatory."

Julian’s heart shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. The grief and guilt that surged through him was a physical agony, so intense he could barely breathe. For five days, he had been living in a foggy haze of work and corporate distraction, truly believing his wife when she told him Oliver was getting therapeutic grief counseling at her family’s private retreat in Vermont. He had trusted her. He had let her manage his life, his household, and his motherless son.

Gently, expertly, Julian scooped the frail boy into his arms, cradling Oliver against his chest as he backed out of the dark, suffocating tunnel.

When Julian emerged back into the service corridor, carrying the frail, shivering boy in his arms, the sight sent an electric shock through the assembled guests who had crowded into the hallway behind them. Several women covered their mouths in horror, and two prominent city council members stepped back, their faces twisted in profound disgust.

"My God," someone whispered from the back of the crowd. "It's true. She locked the boy in the wall."

"Someone call an ambulance! Call the police!" another voice yelled.

Isabella immediately stepped forward, pulling off her dark black serving apron and wrapping it gently around Oliver’s bare, freezing feet. "Mr. Blackstone, the private parlor near the library has a fireplace and a leather sofa. We need to get him warm immediately."

Julian looked at Isabella, his eyes red and brimming with endless gratitude. "Thank you," he choked out. "Lead the way."

As Julian turned to carry his son toward the parlor, he passed Vivienne.

She was standing frozen against the opposite wall, her face as white as a sheet, surrounded by several influential women who had, only an hour ago, been competing to sit next to her at the head table. Now, those same women backed away from her as if she were a venomous snake, their eyes filled with absolute revulsion.

"Julian... please," Vivienne stammered, stepping toward him, her hands trembling. "You don't understand the whole story. He was having a manic episode! He was destroying Elena's old things! He was violent! I was just trying to protect him until the private doctors arrived—I couldn't let the press see him like that!"

Julian stopped. He didn't look at her face. He looked at her eyes—the cold, calculating eyes of a woman he had allowed into his home, his bed, and his son's life.

"If you come anywhere near my son again," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, "I will kill you with my bare hands."

Before Vivienne could respond, the sound of heavy, rapid footsteps echoed down the main corridor. Four uniform officers from the Metropolitan Police Department, accompanied by two high-ranking detectives who had been stationed outside the estate for traffic detail, pushed through the crowd of guests.

"Mr. Blackstone!" Chief Detective Vance called out, his eyes widening as he saw the frail, filthy child cradled in the billionaire's arms. "What happened here?"

Julian didn't hesitate. He looked directly at the chief detective and pointed a sharp finger at his wife.

"That woman kidnapped my son," Julian said clearly, his voice carrying over the murmurs of the crowd. "She locked him inside a unheated, hidden maintenance shaft behind that painting for five days without proper food or water. Arrest her for child endangerment, attempted murder, and kidnapping."

"Julian! No!" Vivienne shrieked as Detective Vance moved instantly toward her.

"Mrs. Blackstone, put your hands behind your back," Vance ordered, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Don't touch me! Do you know who I am?!" Vivienne screamed, kicking and thrashing as the detective seized her wrists. "My father is Senator Vance! My family owns the legal firm that represents half this city! You can't touch me!"

"You have the right to remain silent," Vance barked, snapping the steel cuffs shut around her slender wrists with a harsh, metallic click.

The guests snapped photos furiously as the elegant, impeccably dressed Vivienne Blackstone was forced to her knees, crying hysterically, her expensive dress gathering dust from the floor she had walked on like a queen only moments before.

As the officers dragged Vivienne away through the grand ballroom—past the six hundred horrified, staring guests who were actively recording her downfall—Julian carried Oliver into the parlor, Isabella hovering closely beside them to tend to the child she had saved.
