Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

An hour later, Blackstone Manor was no longer a venue for a glittering high-society gala. It was a chaotic crime scene illuminated by the strobing red and blue lights of half a dozen police cruisers and an emergency medical unit.

The six hundred guests had been cleared from the property, though none of them had truly left; limousine drivers parked along the long, winding driveway while elite socialites texted news outlets, unleashing a wave of sensational headlines that were already consuming global media outlets.

BILLIONAIRE JULIAN BLACKSTONE’S SON FOUND LOCKED IN WALL AT ANNUAL GALA. VIVIENNE BLACKSTONE ARRESTED FOR KIDNAPPING STEP-SON.

Inside the private parlor, the grand marble fireplace roared with a crackling oak fire. Oliver was wrapped in three thick cashmere blankets, sitting on the plush leather sofa. A team of paramedics had already evaluated him, administering IV fluids and high-calorie nutritional gels. Though severely dehydrated, malnourished, and suffering from mild hypothermia, the doctors confirmed that the boy had no broken bones and would make a full physical recovery, thanks entirely to the fact that he had been found before another night passed in the freezing passage.

Oliver refused to let go of Isabella’s hand.

The little boy sat tucked against his father’s side, his eyes wide and fearful whenever a stranger walked past the doorway, but his small fingers remained locked tightly around Isabella’s uniform sleeve. Isabella sat on a low stool next to the sofa, gently wiping the remaining grime from his face with a warm, damp cloth.

Julian sat beside his son, his face pale, his eyes hollowed out by grief and exhaustion. He looked up as Chief Detective Vance walked into the parlor, holding a heavy yellow evidence folder.

"How is he doing, Mr. Blackstone?" Vance asked softly.

"He's alive," Julian replied, his voice raspy. "That is the only thing keeping me breathing right now. Tell me you have her locked in a cell."

"Mrs. Blackstone is currently held at the Central District station without bail," Vance said, taking a seat in an armchair opposite the sofa. "Given the high-profile nature of the crime, the severity of the charges, and the risk of flight, the magistrate signed off on an immediate detention order. But Mr. Blackstone... what my forensic team found inside that hidden passage goes way beyond a sudden act of cruelty."

Julian straightened up, his brow furrowing. "What do you mean?"

Vance opened the yellow folder and pulled out several high-resolution photographs taken by the crime scene technicians inside the wall.

"That passage wasn't just a maintenance crawlspace," Vance explained, pointing at a photo showing a small wooden table, several steel eye-bolts freshly drilled into the brick wall, and a heavy brass padlock mechanism that had been installed on the backside of the hunting painting frame. "This was modified deliberately and recently. The lock on the back of the painting was installed less than three weeks ago by a high-end security contractor. We checked the work order."

Isabella gasped softly, her hand tightening around Oliver’s.

"Three weeks ago?" Julian repeated, his voice dropping into a cold tone. "That was before she even mentioned sending Oliver to Vermont."

"Exactly," Vance said, his face grave. "This wasn't an panicked impulse, Mr. Blackstone. Vivienne planned this. She had the room prepped, she had the locks installed, and she carefully timing her narrative to ensure no one would ask questions about the boy’s absence. She was setting up a long-term isolation."

"Why?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with a desperate confusion. "Why would she do that to a seven-year-old child? She married me eight months ago! She wanted a family! She spent months trying to bond with him!"

"Did she?" Vance asked pointedly, looking between Julian and Isabella. "Or was she bonding with his trust fund?"

Isabella cleared her throat quietly. "Mr. Vance... Mr. Blackstone... there is something you need to see. Something I found in the conservatory three days ago, before Oliver disappeared."

Julian turned to look at Isabella, his eyes filled with desperation. "What is it, Isabella? Tell me."

"Mrs. Blackstone told the staff that she was taking over the management of the late Mrs. Elena’s private estate papers," Isabella explained softly. "She said she was organizing them for tax purposes. But three days ago, while I was cleaning the conservatory office, I saw Mrs. Blackstone putting a set of original legal documents into a portable paper shredder. She left one page on the desk when she rushed out to take a phone call."

"What did the page say?" Vance asked, leaning forward.

"It was a certified copy of Elena Blackstone's personal trust codicil," Isabella revealed, looking Julian straight in the eyes. "The clause that dictated what happens to her forty percent controlling share of Blackstone Innovations if Oliver were to pass away, or be declared legally incapacitated due to hereditary mental illness."

Julian froze. His breathing stopped entirely.

Elena had died of a sudden, aggressive form of neurological cancer two years ago. In her final months, terrified that her vast personal wealth and her ancestral shares in Julian's company might be mismanaged if Julian ever remarried, she had created a bulletproof trust. The entire fortune was locked until Oliver reached his twenty-fifth birthday.

And if Oliver died or was declared permanently incapacitated?

"If Oliver was declared mentally unfit..." Julian whispered, the horrifying realization settling into his chest like lead, "...the management of Elena's shares would automatically default to my legal spouse until a court-appointed trustee was named."

"And who was setting up the narrative that Oliver was 'sick like his mother'?" Vance asked quietly, looking down at the small boy who was now drifting off to sleep against his father's leg. "Vivienne."

Julian closed his eyes, a violent shudder wracking his powerful frame. He hadn't brought a loving stepmother into his home. He had brought a predator who had spent months systematically setting up a nightmare to steal his dead wife's legacy and destroy his son.
