Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

“Ethan, hang up that phone right now!” Diane shrieked, scrambling off my back and lunging toward her son with her arms outstretched. “Are you out of your mind?! I’m your mother! Vanessa is your sister!”

Ethan didn't move an inch. As Diane reached for his arm, he stepped back crisply, keeping his eyes locked on her while speaking clearly into the phone. “The suspects are Diane Vance and Vanessa Vance. One of them is holding a dangerous power tool and a crowbar inside my master closet. My wife is bleeding on the floor. Send an ambulance as well.”

“Sir, officers are en route, stay on the line,” the dispatcher responded.

Ethan ended the call and slipped the phone into his pocket. He immediately stepped past his mother, knelt beside me on the floor, and gently lifted my head onto his lap. His hands were trembling violently as he wiped the blood from the corner of my lip with his sleeve.

“Clara... baby, look at me,” Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with immense guilt and heartbreak. “I’m here. I’m right here. Don't move.”

“Ethan!” Vanessa yelled, dropping the drill onto the wooden closet floor with a loud metallic thud. She stepped out of the closet, her face distorted with rage. “Don't perform this pathetic dramatic show for her! She’s been hoarding your father-in-law’s fortune! We were taking what should be shared with your family! We did this for you!”

Ethan turned his head slowly. The look in his eyes made Vanessa take a step backward.

“For me?” Ethan asked, his voice dripping with venom. “You broke into my home, tore my walls open, and beat my wife half to death for me?”

“She lied to us!” Diane screamed, pointing a shaking finger at my bruised face. “She has millions in antique bonds in that safe! She’s keeping it all for herself while your brother can’t even afford his mortgage payments! A real family shares everything! She’s a toxic, manipulative snake who has turned you against your own flesh and blood!”

I swallowed the metallic taste of blood in my mouth and managed to sit up with Ethan’s arm supporting my back.

“The safe... doesn't contain bonds, Diane,” I rasped, my voice raspy and painful. “It contains my father’s medical records... and the original copies of the corporate audit documents regarding Vance Logistics.”

Diane’s mouth clicked shut instantly. The red color drained from her cheeks, replaced by a pasty, sickly white.

Vanessa gasped, looking at her mother with sudden panic. “What did she say?”

Ethan’s brow furrowed in confusion. “What audit documents? Clara, what are you talking about?”

Before I could answer, the distant, rising wail of police sirens cut through the quiet morning neighborhood.

Diane’s posture collapsed into frantic terror. She grabbed Vanessa by the wrist and shoved her toward the hallway. “We’re leaving! Right now! Move!”

“Don't bother,” Ethan said, standing up and blocking the bedroom door with his broad frame. “The driveway gates are locked electronically from Clara’s master control panel. You aren't leaving this property until the police take you away.”

“Ethan Vance, I am your mother!” Diane screamed, her voice breaking into an unhinged, guttural shriek as she slammed her fists against his chest. “I carried you for nine months! I gave you everything! You cannot let these outsiders put your mother in prison over a worthless girl!”

Ethan didn't flinch. He let her fists hit his chest, standing like a solid brick wall in front of the exit.

“You aren't my mother anymore, Diane,” Ethan said, his voice flat and dead. “You’re just a burglar who brought a drill to my house.”

Downstairs, the heavy front door burst open under the force of the responding officers.

“Police department! Show me your hands!”

Footsteps pounded up the carpeted staircase. Within seconds, four armed officers flooded the master bedroom, their sidearms drawn and flashlights cutting through the dim sunlight.

“On the ground! Both of you, on the ground now!” an officer ordered, pointing directly at Diane and Vanessa.

“Officer, you don't understand!” Vanessa whimpered, falling to her knees with her hands raised over her head. “This is a family misunderstanding! We had permission to be here!”

“They did not,” Ethan said clearly, walking over to stand directly beside the officer in charge. “My name is Ethan Vance, owner of this house. My mother and sister broke into my home, used a power drill to attack my safe, and physically assaulted my wife, Clara Vance. I want them arrested and charged to the fullest extent of the law.”

As the metal cuffs clicked tightly around Diane’s wrists, she twisted her head back toward me, her face contorted with pure, unadulterated venom. “You planned this, didn't you?! You set us up, you little bitch!”

“Take them down to the cruisers,” the lead officer snapped, hauling Diane off the floor.

As they dragged his mother and sister out of the room, their shrieks echoing down the stairs, Ethan fell back to his knees beside me. He wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight against his chest, shaking uncontrollably as he wept into my shoulder.

“I’m sorry, Clara... I’m so sorry,” he sobbed. “I should have listened to you. I should have kept them away from you months ago.”

May you like

I leaned into his embrace, holding him back, but my eyes remained fixed on the ceiling crown molding.

“It’s not over, Ethan,” I whispered quietly. “They didn't just come for the money today. They came because they knew what was inside that safe would ruin them forever.”
