Chapter 5 - The Sister’s Desperation

The following Tuesday morning, I received a frantic phone call from an unknown number while sitting in my law firm’s office downtown.
I answered it calmly. “Clara Vance speaking.”
“Clara! Please, don't hang up! Please!” a sobbing, raspy voice cried over the line.
It was Vanessa. She was calling from the payphone inside the county women’s correctional facility.
“Vanessa?” I said, my tone completely devoid of emotion. “You are not supposed to be contacting me. My attorney issued a full restraining order against you and your mother.”
“Clara, I’m begging you!” Vanessa wept hysterically, her voice muffled by the noisy background chatter of the jail call block. “You have to drop the charges! Mom is fifty-eight years old! She can’t survive in here! They have her in a high-security wing! She’s having panic attacks every hour!”
“Your mother had no problem pinning me to the floor and beating me while you drilled into my safe, Vanessa,” I replied coldly.
“It was Mom’s idea! I swear to God it was all Mom and Marcus!” Vanessa shrieked, instantly throwing her own mother under the bus in her desperate bid for freedom. “Marcus told us that if we didn't get that flash drive, we would all go to prison! Mom told me you wouldn't fight back! She said you were soft! I didn't want to hit you, Clara! I just wanted the papers!”
I listened to her cowardly pleas with a feeling of absolute disgust. “You laughed, Vanessa. While I was bleeding on the floor, you laughed and told your mother to keep me busy so you could finish drilling.”
“I was scared!” she sobbed. “I’ll testify against Marcus! I’ll tell the prosecutors everything about the offshore accounts! I’ll sign whatever confession you want! Just tell Ethan to pull the police report! He’s my brother! He can’t leave me in here to rot!”
“Ethan isn't pulling anything, Vanessa,” a voice spoke up from beside me.
Ethan reached over my desk, pressed the speakerphone button, and leaned into the microphone.
“Ethan? Ethan, is that you?!” Vanessa screamed, hope flaring in her voice. “Ethan, please save me! You know how Mom is, she manipulated me! You’re my brother!”
“You stopped being my sister the second you brought a crowbar into my wife’s home,” Ethan said, his voice flat, razor-sharp, and unmoving. “You set me up to take the fall for millions of dollars in corporate fraud. You watched our mother assault Clara. You are exactly where you deserve to be.”
“Ethan, no! You can’t do this to your family!” she screamed.
“We aren't your family anymore, Vanessa,” Ethan said coldly. “Enjoy your trial.”
He reached down and ended the call.
I looked at Ethan, noting the complete lack of hesitation in his demeanor. A month ago, Ethan had been a dutiful, soft-spoken son who constantly tried to keep the peace between his demanding family and our household. But seeing the physical brutality inflicted upon me had permanently shattered the illusion he had carried since childhood.
He had finally seen his mother and siblings for the monsters they truly were.
Five minutes later, Arthur Pendelton walked into my office, holding a fresh stack of legal notices.
“Clara, Ethan,” Arthur said with a satisfied grin. “The court has just approved our motion for emergency asset freeze against Marcus, Diane, and Vance Logistics. Every personal bank account, real estate title, and luxury vehicle registered in their names has been impounded by the state trustee.”
“What about their legal defense team?” I asked.
“Without access to their stolen corporate funds, they can’t afford high-priced defense attorneys,” Arthur replied, setting the documents down. “The court just appointed public defenders to represent Diane and Marcus.”
Ethan let out a quiet, bitter laugh. “They spent their entire lives putting on appearances, pretending to be high-society royalty while living off stolen money. Now they’re going to federal trial with court-appointed lawyers.”
“And it gets better,” Arthur added, his eyes sparkling with grim satisfaction. “The District Attorney’s office just upgraded the charges against Diane Vance. Based on the home security video, they are now charging her with First-Degree Attempted Robbery, Grand Larceny, and Felony Assault with Depraved Indifference.”

I looked out the window at the city skyline, feeling the smooth leather of my desk chair beneath my hands.
The trap had closed completely around them. And there was no way out.
