Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Ledger

The silence in the master suite was deafening, save for the rhythmic hum of the air purification unit near the French doors. My fingers remained locked around my phone, my pulse thudding violently in my throat.
"You're pretending," I whispered, my mind struggling to process the scene. "Why would a billionaire CEO pretend to be paralyzed in his own house?"
Richard did not answer immediately. He used his arms to swing his lower body off the leather seat of the wheelchair, placing both feet flat on the polished mahogany floor. He stood up. He was well over six feet tall, broad-shouldered despite eight months of enforced confinement, and moved with a terrifying, deliberate precision. He took two steps toward me, leaning slightly against the mahogany bedpost to steady his balance.
"My car didn't slide off the turnpike because of icy conditions eight months ago, Maya," Richard said, his voice flat and void of panic. "The steering column on my sedan was electronically overridden via the remote diagnostic telemetry system. Someone accessed the vehicle's onboard computer while I was driving at sixty-five miles per hour."
"Your family..." I stammered, backing up until my shoulder hit the locked door. "Ethan? Chloe?"
"Ethan is the chief operating officer of Vance Neuro-Tech," Richard explained, sitting down heavily on the edge of the mattress, though his eyes never left mine. "When the crash occurred, I was three days away from finalizing a federal audit into our research and development division. We were developing a non-invasive neural interface meant to restore motor function in spinal injury patients. A project worth billions. But three weeks before my accident, I discovered three hundred million dollars had been siphoned through our subsidiary accounts into an offshore holding firm."
"Who controlled the holding firm?"
"Vitalis Health," Richard replied softly.
The name hit me like a physical blow. Vitalis Health—the exact biomedical equipment firm where my ex-husband, Miguel, worked as a senior corporate accountant, the very firm that funded his lavish lifestyle and his affair with Valerie.
My mouth went dry. "Vitalis? Are you certain?"
Richard reached into the inner lining of his silk robe, pulling out a small, encrypted micro-SD card. "The accident was meant to kill me outright. When I survived, Ethan and Chloe stepped in to handle my recovery. They brought in private physicians, altered my medication regimens, and placed me under constant surveillance. They believe the nerve damage from the spinal shock was permanent. They administer a daily muscle relaxant—a compound called Dantrolene—mixed into my evening nutritional supplements. It induces systemic muscular paralysis if taken consistently."
"You haven't been taking it," I realized aloud.
"For six months, I have been spitting the capsules into disposable towels and flushing them," Richard confessed. "My physical recovery progressed secretly. But I needed someone inside this room who was not on Ethan's payroll. Someone with professional home-care training who could handle the physical routine without asking suspicious questions, but who possessed the intelligence to recognize when a patient's symptoms do not match their chart."
"You hired me specifically?" I asked, a wave of caution washing over me.
"Your application came through a private placement agency," Richard said. "When I reviewed your file, I ran a background check. I saw your father’s medical history. I saw your caregiving certifications. And I saw that your ex-husband was recently promoted to lead financial auditor at Vitalis Health."
I stared at him, stunned by the sheer depth of the web surrounding us. "Miguel... Miguel knew about this?"
"Miguel Torres signed off on the secondary valuation ledger that masked the transfer of Vance Neuro-Tech funds into Vitalis accounts three weeks ago," Richard revealed coldly. "Your ex-husband isn't just a dishonest partner, Maya. He is an accomplice to corporate treason and attempted murder."
Before I could answer, a sharp, authoritative knock echoed on the opposite side of the heavy oak door.
"Richard?" Chloe's voice cut through the wood, high-pitched and falsely sweet. "Is everything alright in there? Why is the deadbolt engaged?"
May you like
Richard immediately fell back onto the bed, limp and lifeless, his face instantly relaxing into a vacant, exhausted expression as he signaled to me with his eyes.
"Unbolt it," he mouthed silently.
