Chapter 3 - Shadows on the Veranda

I wiped the cold sweat from my palms against my uniform trousers, took a deep breath to steady my breathing, and unlocked the door.
Chloe stood in the corridor, dressed in an expensive silk dress, a crystal glass of white wine held loosely in her right hand. Her eyes narrowed instantly as she looked past my shoulder toward Richard, who lay sprawled across the pillows, looking pale and completely motionless.
"What is taking so long, Maya?" Chloe asked, stepping into the room without an invitation. Her sharp gaze scanned the nightstand, the bathroom door, and the positioning of the wheelchair. "We don't normally lock doors in this house. Security policy."
"Mr. Vance experienced a severe muscle spasm while I was washing his legs," I replied smoothly, adopting the neutral, clinical tone I had mastered during my father's illness. "The tremors were causing his hips to twist off the edge of the mattress. I locked the door to ensure no one barged in while I was adjusting his trousers and securing his safety harness. It’s standard patient dignity protocol."
Chloe stepped closer to the bed, peering down at Richard. She reached out and deliberately pinched his lower calf with her long, manicured nails. Hard.
Richard didn't flinch. Not a single facial muscle moved. His breathing remained slow, shallow, and entirely unchanged.
"He seems very sedated tonight," Chloe remarked, her eyes flicking to the tray sitting on the side table. "Did he finish his evening supplement smoothie?"
"Every drop," I lied, keeping my expression entirely flat. "He complained of fatigue shortly after."
In reality, the entire glass of chocolate-flavored nutritional supplement, laced with heavy doses of Dantrolene, had been dumped into an empty vacuum flask I kept inside my medical bag three minutes before she knocked.
Chloe stared at me for a long, uncomfortable moment. "You're very efficient, Maya. Much more efficient than the last nurse."
"The last nurse lacked proper trauma transfer training," I said calmly. "I spent four years managing stroke recovery. I don't panic when a patient exhibits sudden involuntary reflex spasms."
"Just make sure you follow Dr. Harrison's medication schedule to the exact minute," Chloe said, turning toward the doorway. "Ethan is very particular about his brother's routine. Any deviation—any unapproved exercise or unscripted physical therapy—will result in your immediate termination without pay."
"Understood, Mrs. Vance."
She walked out, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the marble floor of the corridor until the heavy double doors at the end of the hall closed shut.
I locked the door once more, leaning my forehead against the cool wood as my chest heaved.
"She pinched you," I whispered, turning around.
Richard opened his eyes, sitting up slowly. "I've had eight months to master sensory dissociation, Maya. A fingernail is nothing compared to the nerve pain of a spinal contusion."
He swung his legs out over the floor once more. "Ethan and Chloe are holding an emergency board meeting here at the estate tomorrow evening. They intend to use my documented physical incompetence to invoke the incapacity clause in Vance Neuro-Tech's charter. They will force a shareholder vote to merge Vance Neuro-Tech with Vitalis Health."
"If that merger goes through..."
"If it goes through, Vitalis acquires all of our proprietary patents, the paper trail for the missing three hundred million dollars is erased forever, and my life becomes entirely superfluous," Richard said grimly. "They won't need to keep me alive in a wheelchair anymore."
"What do you need me to do?" I asked, my blood running hot with a sudden, fierce determination.
For twelve years, I had allowed myself to be sidelined, lied to, and discarded by people who thought my quietness was weakness. Ofelia had told me I couldn't survive on my own. Miguel had treated me as a passive piece of furniture in his grand corporate ascent.
I was done being quiet.
Richard looked at me, a subtle, admiring spark gleaming in his dark eyes. "Tomorrow night, during the dinner, Ethan's personal safe in his study will be unlocked for roughly twenty minutes while he retrieves the stock proxy forms. Inside that safe is the original hard-copy audit report signed by your ex-husband. I need those documents."
May you like
"Where will you be?"
"I will be sitting in my wheelchair at the head of the dining table," Richard smiled darkly, "playing the quiet, helpless invalid."
