Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

"Valerie made you?" I asked, my voice smooth, calm, and utterly devoid of pity. "Did Valerie make you cheat on me for two months? Did Ofelia make you tell me I was worthless without your salary?"
"Maya, please!" Miguel cried, tears streaming down his cheeks as a federal agent grabbed his arms. "I'll give you everything! The savings, the car, the house! Just tell the auditor I didn't know about the car accident! I didn't know they were trying to kill him!"
"You knew you were stealing millions of dollars from a man who was fighting for his life," I said coldly. "You built your career on fraud, Miguel. And now you get to pay for it."
Agent Miller pulled Miguel’s arms behind his back, clicking the handcuffs into place with a sharp SNAP.
As they led Miguel toward the front doors, Ofelia came running down the hallway, her dress disheveled, screaming frantically. "Miguel! My boy! What are you doing to my son?!"
She spotted me standing beside Richard. Her face twisted into pure venom as she rushed toward me, pointing a trembling finger at my face.
"You!" Ofelia shrieked. "You organized this! You destroyed my son's life because he found a younger, better woman! You bitter, barren leech!"
Before I could answer, Richard stepped between us, his massive frame completely blocking Ofelia from my sight.
"Mrs. Torres," Richard said, his voice dropping into a low, thunderous register that shook the decorative sconces on the wall. "Your son destroyed his own life through greed, cowardice, and stupidity. Maya did not destroy him; she exposed him."
Richard stepped closer, looking down at Ofelia with cold contempt. "Furthermore, as owner of this estate and primary investor in Vitalis Health's parent corporation, I have already initiated legal asset forfeiture proceedings against your son’s estate. The house you currently live in was purchased with laundered funds from Vance Neuro-Tech. You have forty-eight hours to pack your bags and leave the property before county sheriffs evict you."
Ofelia gasped, clutching her chest, her face turning gray as she realized the full magnitude of her ruin.
"You said Maya couldn't survive on her own," Richard added softly, his eyes flashing with lethal satisfaction. "It appears it is you who will find out how brutal the world is without her."
Ofelia stumbled backward, weeping hysterically, as two security guards escorted her out into the rainy night behind her handcuffed son.
The grand banquet hall was quiet now, save for the low murmur of federal agents collecting evidence folders from the dining table.
I stood near the marble hearth, feeling a strange, profound sense of stillness wash over me. The ghosts of my past—the twelve years of quiet servitude, the belittlement, the betrayal—had been swept away in a single, decisive evening.
Richard walked over, holding two glasses of sparkling mineral water. He handed one to me.
"Are you alright, Maya?" he asked gently.
May you like
"I have never been better in my life," I smiled, taking a sip of the water. "Thank you, Richard."
"No," Richard said, looking into my eyes with intense, unwavering gratitude. "Thank you. You saved my life tonight."
