Chapter 6 - THE COMMISSION SPEAKS

Volkov pulled his phone out, his cold eyes darting to the screen.
The caller ID displayed a single name: DON CARMINE — THE CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMISSION.
Volkov answered, his confident demeanor instantly vanishing. "Don Carmine—"
"You broke the sacred law, Nikolai," Don Carmine's booming voice roared through the phone speaker, loud enough for everyone on the platform to hear. "You murdered a boss of the Five Families on neutral ground eleven years ago. You lied to the council."
"Carmine, listen to me—" Volkov stammered, sweat breaking out on his forehead.
"The council has just voted," Carmine interrupted coldly. "Your hit contract on Adrian Moretti is revoked. As of this second, the Volkov syndicate is stripped of its territories in New York. Adrian... do you hear me?"
Adrian looked at the phone. "I hear you, Don Carmine."
"The traitor Marco Vance and Nikolai Volkov belong to you," Carmine declared. "Blood pays for blood. The Commission stands down."
The line went dead.
Volkov's mercenaries looked at each other in horror. The backing of the Five Families was gone. They were now isolated men standing in a dark tunnel with a blood feud on their hands.
"Kill them!" Volkov screamed, losing his composure completely! "KILL THEM ALL!"
Two of Volkov's guards raised their weapons—but Adrian was faster!
He fired three precision shots, dropping two mercenaries instantly, then grabbed Elena and dived behind the thick iron wheels of the presidential train car as a hail of gunfire erupted across the platform!
"Marco!" Volkov yelled frantically, backing toward the dark subway exit tunnel. "Cover us!"
Marco stepped out from the service corridor, pulling a secondary pistol. He looked at Volkov, then at Adrian hiding behind the steel train wheels.
"You promised me half of Manhattan, Volkov," Marco said, his voice shaking with desperation.
"You get nothing if we don't leave this tunnel alive!" Volkov roared!
Marco's eyes shifted. The lifetime of deceit, the betrayal of his closest friend Anthony, the years of hiding behind a lie—it all collapsed on him in a single terrifying moment.
Marco raised his gun... and pointed it directly at Nikolai Volkov!
"I spent eleven years being your dog!" Marco screamed!
BANG!
Volkov pulled a tiny pocket pistol from his coat sleeve and shot Marco straight through the chest before Marco could pull his trigger!

Marco stumbled backward, falling onto the cold steel rail line, blood pooling beneath his suit.
Volkov turned to run down the dark subway tunnel alone!
