Chapter 4 - The Transformation

At seven o'clock the following morning, Ava was awakened not by a loud alarm, but by the soft click of the master guest room door opening.
She sat up in the massive bed, rubbing her eyes, to find a team of six women standing in her bedroom, led by a tall, impeccably dressed man with silver hair and sharp designer glasses.
"Good morning, Miss Knox!" the silver-haired man announced with a crisp French accent. "I am Henri, head of image direction for Vance Global. Mr. Vance has instructed us that you require a complete wardrobe restructuring before your noon press briefing."
Behind Henri, two assistants rolled in three massive racks containing dozens of high-fashion garments—tailored silk blouses, cashmere coats, Italian leather boots, and elegant day dresses from Chanel, Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent. Two other women set up a portable vanity light station equipped with luxury skincare and cosmetics.
Ava pulled the duvet up to her chin, flustered. "Press briefing? What press briefing?"
Henri smiled warmly. "The one taking place downstairs in the lobby at twelve o'clock, mademoiselle. The entire financial press core of New York has been waiting outside the building since dawn."
For the next four hours, Ava experienced a level of luxury she didn't know existed. Her skin was hydrated with rare botanical serums; her dark hair was washed, cut into a sleek, shoulder-grazing bob, and styled into soft, elegant waves; her nails were manicured to perfection.
When it came to clothing, Henri bypassed the heavily beaded, flashy gowns, choosing instead a striking ensemble that projected quiet, terrifying authority: a bespoke cream-colored double-breasted suit crafted from Italian wool, paired with a silk camisole underneath, finished with sharp beige pointed-toe heels.
Around her neck, Henri carefully clasped a thin platinum chain holding a single, flawless pear-cut black diamond—Julian Vance’s signature gemstone family motif.
"Magnifique," Henri breathed, stepping back to let Ava view herself in the full-length mirror.
Ava stared at her reflection.
The exhausted, pale girl with worn shoes and red-rimmed eyes was gone. Standing in the mirror was a striking, powerful woman whose dark eyes burned with confidence, framed by pristine tailoring and effortless elegance.
A soft knock sounded at the door frame.
Julian stood in the entrance, wearing a crisp charcoal three-piece suit. He froze for a moment, his gray eyes sweeping slowly over her from her sleek hair down to her ivory heels.
A flicker of dark, primal admiration passed through his gaze before he stepped into the room.
"You look stunning, Ava," he said softly, his voice lower than usual.
"I feel like an imposter," Ava admitted, though she kept her back straight.
Julian stopped in front of her, reaching into his vest pocket. He pulled out a velvet ring box and opened it.
Inside rested a massive, ten-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, set in a band of paved black diamonds. It was so brilliant it seemed to capture every ray of light in the room.
Julian lifted the ring from the velvet lining, taking Ava’s left hand in his.
"An imposter wears a costume to deceive people," Julian said, looking into her eyes as he slid the heavy ring onto her ring finger. It fit perfectly. "You are wearing armour to claim what should have been yours long ago."
Ava looked down at the diamond glittering on her hand. It was cold, heavy, and undeniably real.
"Are you ready?" Julian asked, offering her his arm.
Ava took a deep breath, resting her hand comfortably over his forearm. "Let's go."
Downstairs in the private lobby of The Sovereign, over fifty journalists, photographers, and camera crews were held behind velvet ropes by a wall of Vance Global security officers. Camera flashes strobed constantly against the glass walls, casting blinding bursts of white light across the room.
When the executive elevator doors slid open and Julian Vance stepped out with Ava Knox on his arm, the roar of shouting reporters was deafening.
"Mr. Vance! Over here! Is it true?!" "Who is she, Julian?!" "Miss Knox! Are you really engaged to Julian Vance?!" "Is it true you were working as an event coordinator last night?!"
Julian guided Ava to a standing microphone setup in the center of the lobby. He didn't raise his hand for silence; he simply stood there, his imposing presence causing the wall of screaming journalists to fall quiet within seconds.
Julian looked down at the cameras, his face an unreadable mask of absolute authority.
"I will make one statement," Julian’s baritone voice echoed through the lobby speakers. "Last night at the Harbor Children’s Gala, rumors began circulating regarding my personal life. I am here to confirm that Miss Ava Knox and I are officially engaged to be married."
The room erupted into a fresh frenzy of camera flashes.
"Furthermore," Julian continued smoothly, cutting off the noise, "Miss Knox has today been appointed as the Chief Executive Director of the newly established Knox Foundation for Youth Education—backed by an initial fifty-million-dollar endowment from Vance Global. Any inquiries regarding her past, her character, or her business operations will be handled directly through my legal department."
He looked down at Ava, his expression softening into a look of deep, public devotion. He bent his head down and gently pressed his lips against her temple.
"That is all," Julian said.
He turned, keeping his hand securely resting on the small of Ava’s back, and led her through the side exit into a waiting vehicle, leaving the media circus exploding in their wake.
In the back of the car, Ava pulled out her personal phone, which she had kept turned off since last night.
She switched it on.
The screen lit up instantly with over two hundred missed calls, ninety text messages, and dozens of voicemails.
At the very top of the list were fourteen consecutive missed calls from a single contact:
Damian Cross.
A text message from him popped up on the screen three seconds later:
Ava, please answer me! I’m begging you! Sterling North fired me last night at midnight! I’ve been evicted from my corporate apartment! Please, Ava, talk to Julian! Tell him it was a mistake! I love you, Ava, please!
Ava stared at the glowing blue text on her screen.
She didn't cry. She didn't feel a pang of sympathy. She felt nothing at all.
Slowly, deliberately, Ava slid her thumb across the glass, selected Damian’s contact card, and pressed: BLOCK THIS CALLER.
She locked her phone and dropped it into her new designer handbag.
Beside her, Julian watched her with a quiet, approving gleam in his gray eyes.
"Satisfied?" he asked softly.

Ava looked out the window as Manhattan glided past—a city that no longer felt terrifying or cold.
"Not yet," Ava said, a cool, confident smile gracing her lips. "We’re just getting started."
