Chapter 9 - Where They Belong

One year later.

The grand ballroom of the Astor Grand Hotel was once again illuminated by crystal chandeliers for the annual Harbor Children’s Foundation Gala.

The room was filled with the same high-society figures, politicians, and business titans.

Near the central entrance, a new assistant event coordinator was frantically trying to repair a damaged floral arrangement near a service tray.

A young, arrogant hedge-fund manager stepped near the flowers, laughing loudly with his friends, bumping into the worker's tray and causing a vase of cold water to tip toward her shoes.

Before the liquid could spill, a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal suit stepped forward, smoothly catching the falling vase before it hit the floor, placing it securely back on the table.

The hedge-fund manager turned to yell, but froze instantly when he saw the man's face.

"M... Mr. Vance!" the young manager stammered, going deathly pale.

Julian Vance didn't even look at the manager. He simply gave him a single, freezing glance that forced the young man to apologize rapidly to the event worker and flee to the far side of the ballroom.

Julian turned to the young female worker, who was trembling with shock.

"Are you alright?" Julian asked gently.

"Yes... yes, sir! Thank you so much!" the girl gasped.

"Keep your head up," Julian advised smoothly. "The people in this room only have power if you let them think they do."

He walked back to the center of the ballroom, where a crowd of international dignitaries was gathered around the keynote speaker of the evening.

Ava Vance stood at the podium.

She wore a breathtaking white silk column gown, her sleek dark hair styled elegantly, the black diamond ring glittering brilliantly on her finger. She spoke into the microphone with complete, hypnotic authority, announcing a new two-hundred-million-dollar national initiative for underprivileged youth housing funded jointly by the Knox Foundation and Vance Global.

The crowd listened in spellbound silence.

Near the back of the room, standing near the catering doors, was Damian Cross.

He was wearing a cheap, rented tuxedo, holding a tray of champagne flutes—having finally been reduced to working as an event server for Bellmere Events after being completely blacklisted from every corporate sector in the nation.

Damian watched Ava standing at the podium. He watched her speak with power, grace, and majesty. He watched as the most influential people on Earth applauded her every word.

He looked at his own wet, tray-stained hands, then looked back at Ava.

A single tear rolled down Damian's cheek as he finally realized the terrifying, absolute truth: Ava had never needed his help to reach the top. He had simply been the weight holding her back from the sky.

When Ava finished her speech, the ballroom erupted into a standing ovation.

She stepped down from the podium, walking past senators and billionaires, ignoring their eager praise, until she reached the man waiting for her near the grand staircase.

Julian extended his hand to her.

Ava placed her hand in his, feeling the warm, familiar, unshakeable strength of his grip.

"How was I?" she whispered with a playful smile.

Julian leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her lips in front of the entire clapping crowd.

May you like

"You were perfect, Mrs. Vance," Julian whispered against her ear, his eyes burning with eternal devotion. "You are absolute perfection."

Together, hand in hand, they walked out of the ballroom and into the bright, endless future they had built together—where no one would ever make her feel small again.
