Chapter 6 - The Broken Shadow

Julian led Ava toward the quiet, dim art gallery housing the ancient Egyptian exhibits—a section away from the main noise of the ball.
Standing near a glass case containing ancient gold artifacts was Damian Cross.
He looked terrible. His tailored tuxedo was slightly wrinkled, his tie was crooked, and dark, exhausted circles shadowed his sunken eyes. He was clutching a half-empty glass of cheap whiskey, desperately scanning the room for anyone willing to talk to him.
When he turned around and saw Ava standing before him—framed by thirty-foot marble pillars, wearing a fifty-carat sapphire necklace, accompanied by the most powerful man in New York—his whiskey glass nearly slipped from his fingers.
"Ava..." Damian breathed, taking a frantic step forward. "Ava, oh God... you came."
Julian stepped back slightly, leaning against a stone pillar, allowing Ava to face him alone.
Ava stopped five feet away from Damian. She looked at him with the calm detachment one might offer a stranger asking for directions.
"Hello, Damian," she said softly.
"Ava, please," Damian begged, falling to his knees right there on the polished museum floor, uncaring of who saw him. "You have to help me! Sterling North blacklisted me from every financial firm on the East Coast! I lost my apartment! My bank accounts are frozen because of debt collectors! I have nothing left!"
He reached out, trying to grab the hem of her dark blue dress.
Ava simply took one small step back, avoiding his touch completely.
"You have what you earned, Damian," Ava said quietly.
"Ava, I made a mistake!" Damian wept, real tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. "I was stupid! I was blinded by Victoria's money and her family's status! But I never stopped loving you! I think about us every single night—about our little apartment in Crown Heights! Remember how we used to laugh? Remember how you used to hold me when I was stressed about exams?!"
He looked up at her, his eyes wild with desperate, pathetic hope.
"We can have that back, Ava!" Damian pleaded. "Leave Julian! He doesn't love you—he's just using you as a trophy! Come back to me! We can start over!"
Ava looked down at the man she had loved for four years.
She remembered the nights she had gone to sleep with a stabbing headache from hunger so he could eat steak. She remembered the embarrassment she felt when he refused to hold her hand in public near his business school classmates. She remembered the cold liquid pouring down her dress while he laughed.
And she felt... nothing. No anger, no sadness, no lingering pain—only a vast, empty pity for a man who had traded his soul for a illusion of status, only to end up with neither.
"I don't remember those nights, Damian," Ava said, her voice completely steady. "Because the man I did those things for never existed. You were just a ghost I paid for."
Damian choked on a sob. "Ava... please..."
"If you ever come near me again," Ava said, turning her back on him, "I won't need Julian to destroy you. I will do it myself through my foundation's legal team. Goodbye, Damian."
She walked away from him, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone floor. Behind her, Damian collapsed forward, resting his forehead against the cold floor, sobbing bitterly into the empty gallery.
Julian stepped alongside her as she reached the main archway.
He looked down at her, his gray eyes burning with an intense, fierce heat.
"Are you alright?" he asked softly.
Ava stopped, turning to look up into his striking face. She looked at his sharp jaw, his protective stance, and the genuine care shining in his eyes—a care he had shown her long before she ever knew his name.
"I’m more than alright, Julian," Ava said, a warm, genuine smile breaking across her face. "I'm free."

Julian reached out, taking her hand, his thumb gently stroking her knuckles.
"Then let's go home," he whispered.
