Chapter 10 - The Heir of the Empire

Three hours later.

The master suite on the top floor had been converted into a private delivery room, staffed by Dr. Vance and two elite neonatal nurses.

The room was filled with the sound of heavy breathing, strained gasps, and the steady, quiet encouragement of a man who held the city in his fists but was completely helpless in the presence of birth.

"Push, Norah! One more time!" Dr. Vance instructed calmly from the end of the bed. "His head is fully crowned!"

Norah screamed, squeezing Dominic’s hand so tightly her knuckles turned white. Dominic stood beside her, his tuxedo jacket discarded, his shirt sleeves rolled up, his face covered in sweat as he supported her back with his strong arm.

"You can do it, my love," Dominic whispered fiercely in her ear, kissing her damp temple again and again. "You are the strongest woman on this earth. Give me our boy."

With a final, shattering cry, Norah pushed with every ounce of strength remaining in her exhausted body.

A sudden, sharp cry filled the master suite—a loud, healthy, furious scream that cut through the tension like a golden blade.

"He's here!" Dr. Vance announced with a wide grin, holding up a slippery, red, squirming newborn. "Healthy, strong, and very vocal!"

Norah collapsed back against the soft pillows, her chest heaving, tears of pure, unadulterated joy pouring down her face.

The nurses quickly cleaned the baby, wrapped him in a soft blue blanket, and brought him over to the bed.

Dr. Vance placed the bundle gently into Norah’s waiting arms.

Norah looked down at her son. He had a mop of fine, dark hair, chubby red cheeks, and when he slowly opened his tiny eyes, they revealed two brilliant, unmistakable slate-gray orbs staring back at her.

"Look at him," Norah sobbed softly, stroking his velvety cheek with her index finger. "Look at your boy, Dominic."

Dominic leaned over the bed, his large, scarred hand trembling violently as he reached out and touched the baby's tiny, curled fist. The newborn instantly opened his hand and wrapped his microscopic fingers around Dominic’s thick index finger, holding on with surprising strength.

A choked sob escaped Dominic’s throat. He dropped to his knees beside the bed, burying his face in Norah’s arm, weeping openly as his son held his finger tightly.

"He's perfect," Dominic rasped, looking up at his wife with raw, unfiltered adoration. "What is his name?"

Norah looked down at the tiny sleeping profile—the exact same profile she had hidden inside her wool coat seven months ago on a cold, terrifying afternoon.

"Alexander," she said softly. "Alexander Dominic Russo."

"Alexander," Dominic repeated, his voice filled with pride. "Defender of men."

The bedroom door opened slowly. Marco brought little Lily into the room, holding her hand. The four-year-old tiptoed over to the massive bed, her eyes wide with awe as she peeked over the edge of the mattress.

"Is that my brother?" Lily whispered loudly.

"Come here, Bug," Dominic said, lifting his daughter easily onto the bed beside Norah.

Lily leaned over and stared into the baby's face. Alexander let out a soft snuffle and stretched his tiny arm out from the blanket.

"He’s so small," Lily giggled, touching his dark hair gently. "Can I show him how to draw green dragons now?"

"In a few years, sweetheart," Norah smiled, kissing the top of Lily’s head, then leaning her shoulder against Dominic’s chest.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the moon hung high and bright over the vast Russo estate. The perimeter was secured by armed men, the city below was silent, and the war was finally over.

Inside the room, beneath the soft golden glow of the chandelier, sat a family forged in secrets, tested by fire, and bound together by an unbreakable love.

Norah looked down at her husband, her daughter, and her newborn son. She no longer needed oversized sweaters. She no longer needed to run. She had found her place, her strength, and her sanctuary inside the empire of the man who had guarded her heart.
