Chapter 9 - The Vows of Iron

Four months later.
Late September brought a crisp, cool breeze to the estate, painting the surrounding trees in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and deep crimson.
The glass conservatory had been transformed into an intimate ceremony hall. White roses and dark green ivy wrapped around the wrought-iron pillars, catching the warm, golden light of the setting sun.
Norah stood before a small altar, looking breathlessly beautiful in a custom white silk gown designed specifically to accommodate her nine-month pregnancy. The dress flowed around her curves like liquid ice, holding her full, prominent bump with queenly grace. No more oversized sweaters. No more hiding in the shadows.
Standing across from her was Dominic Russo. He wore an immaculate black tuxedo, his dark hair combed back, looking healthy, powerful, and utterly devoted. The scars on his face and chest were hidden beneath the fine tailoring, but the love in his slate-gray eyes was completely exposed for the small gathering to see.
Lily stood beside them as the flower girl, wearing a tiny white dress, holding a basket of red rose petals, grinning from ear to ear.
"In the presence of those who guard our lives and those who share our blood," the private officiant spoke softly, "do you, Dominic Russo, take Norah Hayes to be your wedded wife, to protect, honor, and cherish in war and in peace?"
Dominic looked directly into Norah’s eyes, taking both of her trembling hands in his.
"I do," he said, his deep voice carrying an absolute certainty that echoed off the glass walls. "I took you into my home as a stranger, Norah. But you became the heart of this house. You protected my daughter, you carried my son, and you saved my life. I give you my empire, my name, and my soul. Forever."
Tears streamed down Norah’s cheeks, catching the golden sunlight.
"And do you, Norah Hayes," the officiant continued, "take Dominic Russo to be your wedded husband?"
"I do," Norah answered without a single second of hesitation. "I came into your world terrified of the darkness, Dominic. But you showed me that the darkest shadow is just proof of a bright light standing nearby. I love you, my monster, my husband, my home."
Dominic pulled her into his arms, minding her large bump, and brought his lips down on hers in a passionate, searing kiss as the small gathering of trusted guards and staff broke into warm applause.
"I pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant smiled.
Dominic pulled back slightly, looking down at his bride. "Mrs. Russo," he purred softly.
"Mr. Russo," she beamed back.
Suddenly, Norah gasped, her hand dropping instantly to the low curve of her abdomen. A sharp, intense contraction rippled across her torso, making her knees buckle slightly.
Dominic caught her instantly, his eyes wide with sudden panic. "Norah? What is it?"

A warm trickle of fluid ran down the inside of her white silk gown, pooling on the polished marble floor.
Norah looked up at her new husband, a half-laugh, half-gasp escaping her lips. "Dominic... I think your son wants to attend the reception."
