Chapter 8 - The Crucible of Power

Three days later.

The private ICU room on the ground floor of the compound was quiet, save for the rhythmic, steady beep of the heart monitor.

Dominic lay in the hospital bed, hooked up to IV lines and blood bags. The bullet had missed his vital organs by less than an inch, but he had lost a massive amount of blood before Dr. Vance could stabilize him in the private surgical suite.

Norah sat in an armchair beside his bed, holding his cold, right hand in hers. She looked exhausted, dark circles bruised under her eyes, wearing a simple cotton maternity dress. She hadn't left his bedside for seventy-two hours, refusing to sleep in the master suite upstairs until he opened his eyes.

Lily was asleep on the small sofa in the corner of the room, wrapped in a bright pink blanket, safe and unharmed.

The door opened quietly. Marco stepped inside, carrying a thick leather dossier. He bowed his head respectfully to Norah.

"Mrs. Russo," Marco said softly—a title he had started using naturally since the night of the attack, one that Norah no longer bothered to correct. "The perimeter has been fully cleared and reinforced. The Moretti family has been completely wiped out from the city. The other families have called a truce. They know who holds the power now."

Norah looked at the security chief. "And the leak inside our house?"

"Handled," Marco replied coldly. "It was the head chef. He won't be a problem ever again."

Norah nodded slowly. A year ago, the casual mention of a man being executed would have made her faint with horror. But now, sitting beside the man she loved, carrying his son, protecting his daughter, she felt a cold, sharp iron settle into her own soul. She had become part of this world, not by choice, but by love.

A soft groan came from the bed.

Norah instantly stood up, dropping the leather dossier onto the nightstand, and leaned over Dominic.

His long eyelashes fluttered, and then his pale gray eyes slowly opened. He blinked against the soft ambient light of the room, his gaze searching blindly until it landed on Norah’s face.

"Norah..." his voice was a dry, barely audible rasp.

"I'm here," she whispered, tears of relief instantly filling her eyes. She lifted his hand to her lips and kissed his bruised knuckles. "I'm right here, Dominic."

His eyes moved down to her stomach, resting on the soft swell of her dress. "The... the baby?"

"He's perfect," she smiled through her tears, taking his hand and placing it flat against her stomach.

As if on cue, the baby kicked sharply against Dominic’s palm—a strong, vigorous thrust that made Dominic’s eyes widen in absolute wonder.

"He's strong," Dominic rasped, a genuine smile breaking across his pale face.

"He takes after his father," Norah replied softly.

Dominic looked at his daughter asleep on the sofa, then back up at Norah. He squeezed her hand with as much strength as he could muster.

"You didn't leave," he noted softly.

May you like

"I told you," Norah said, stepping closer and leaning down to press her forehead gently against his. "You don't get to get rid of me that easily. We're a family now, Dominic. Whether you like it or not."

"I like it," Dominic whispered, reaching up with his other hand to cup the back of her neck, pulling her down into a deep, gentle kiss that tasted of life, survival, and a future forged in fire.
