Chapter 2 - The Storm on the Gold Coast

Luke Morgan returned to his Gold Coast residence at precisely nine-thirty that evening.
The house was eerily silent. The soft ambient lighting in the marble entryway was on, but the usual scent of home—the jasmine candles Sophia favored, the quiet sound of her laptop keys clicking in the study—was entirely absent.
Luke unbuttoned his charcoal suit jacket, tossing his keys onto the foyer table. He expected to find Sophia in her reading nook upstairs, perhaps quiet, perhaps distant, as she had been for the last several months. He knew he had neglected her at the River Club dinner, but in his mind, business and family loyalty to the Russells took precedence over emotional reassurances.
He walked up the grand staircase and entered the master bedroom.
The room was pristine. The bed was made with surgical precision. But as he stepped toward his dressing table, his gaze locked onto a thick manila envelope resting beside his watch winder.
Luke picked it up, pulling out the document inside.
PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE. PLAINTIFF: SOPHIA BENNETT MORGAN. DEFENDANT: LUKE ALEXANDER MORGAN.
Luke’s jaw hardened, his dark eyes scanning the legal jargon until they stopped at the signature page.
Sophia’s handwriting was clear, crisp, and completely unhurried. Attached to the petition was a signed waiver waiving all claims to spousal support, marital assets, real estate holdings, and liquid accounts.
She had asked for nothing.
Not the house. Not the cars. Not a single dollar of his multi-million-dollar estate.
"What is the meaning of this?" Luke muttered, pulling out his phone and dialing Sophia’s number.
“The mobile subscriber you are trying to reach is unavailable or has been turned off...”
A sudden, unfamiliar coldness settled into Luke’s chest. He hung up and immediately called Marco, his chief of security.
"Marco," Luke commanded, his voice dropping into that terrifyingly quiet register that made his men tremble. "Find my wife. Now."
"Boss?" Marco sounded confused. "Mrs. Morgan left the estate two hours ago in a blue rideshare. She had one suitcase. We assumed... we assumed she was going to her design studio."
"She left divorce papers on my bed, Marco," Luke said, his grip tightening on the phone until his knuckles turned white. "Track her phone. Find out where she checked in. If she’s at a hotel, I want my team outside her door in twenty minutes."
While Luke stood in his bedroom, his phone buzzed in his hand with an incoming call.
It wasn't Marco.
It was his sister, Elena.
Luke answered, his voice sharp with anger. "Not now, Elena. Sophia has done something insane—"
"Luke, listen to me!" Elena’s voice was frantic, bordering on hysterical over the phone. "Did Sophia come home? Is she with you?!"
"She left," Luke snapped. "She packed a bag and had her lawyer draft divorce papers. What do you know about this?"
There was a gasp on the other end of the line, followed by the heavy sound of Elena crying.
"Oh God... she really left..." Elena sobbed. "Luke... you need to find her right now. Not because of the divorce. Because of her medical charts!"
Luke’s entire body went rigid. "What medical charts? Sophia hasn't been sick."
"She came to my clinic this morning, Luke," Elena confessed, her voice shaking violently. "She came to discuss terminating a pregnancy. She is twenty weeks pregnant with your child!"
The phone nearly slipped from Luke’s hand. The world around him seemed to stop spinning entirely.

"Pregnant?" Luke whispered, his voice cracking for the first time in ten years. "Sophia is... pregnant?"
"Yes! But Luke, listen to me!" Elena cried out. "I ran her specialized prenatal panel after she left the office. She has severe late-onset preeclampsia markers and a rare placental complication! If her stress levels spike, or if she doesn't receive specialized treatment within forty-eight hours, both she and the baby could suffer fatal complications!"
