Chapter 7 - The Emergency Suite

The next four hours passed in a chaotic blur of bright hospital lights, soft-beeping monitors, and quiet, urgent medical whispers.
I was rushed into the high-risk obstetric wing at Northwestern Memorial Hospital under a false name, secured by eight of Luke's private guards standing at every entrance of the floor.
Elena worked alongside the chief of maternal-fetal medicine, administering continuous intravenous magnesium sulfate and blood pressure stabilizers to arrest the preeclampsia spike and prevent placental separation.
Through it all, Luke never left my side.
He sat on a small stool beside my hospital bed, dressed in his wrinkled, rain-stained suit, holding my right hand in both of his. He didn't sleep. He didn't talk on his phone. Whenever a nurse approached to take blood, Luke held my hand tighter, murmuring soft, desperate promises into my hair.
By 5:00 AM, the beeping of the heart monitor had settled into a slow, rhythmic pattern.
Elena stepped into the room, pulling off her surgical mask, a weary but profoundly relieved smile on her face.
"The fetal heart rate has stabilized," Elena announced softly, looking at both of us. "The magnesium drip worked. The abruption risk has been contained, and the baby is completely safe."
I let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, fresh tears rolling down my cheeks onto the white hospital pillow.
Luke closed his eyes, leaning his head against the edge of my mattress, his entire body trembling as he breathed a silent prayer of thanks.
"However," Elena added, her tone turning stern as she looked directly at her brother. "Sophia cannot be exposed to any emotional stress for the remainder of this pregnancy. She needs mandatory bed rest, absolute quiet, and zero family drama. If I see Mother within fifty feet of this hospital room, Luke, I will personally have security throw her out."
"She won't come near here," Luke said, his voice cold as steel as he raised his head. "I've already revoked her security access to the estate and frozen her allowance accounts."
Elena nodded, satisfied, and stepped out of the room to give us privacy.
I lay in the bed, watching Luke as he gently smoothed back wet strands of hair from my forehead.
"You don't have to freeze your mother out, Luke," I whispered weakly.
"Yes, I do," Luke insisted, his thumb lightly tracing my cheekbone. "She spent three years making you feel small because she couldn't control you. She tried to replace you with someone she could manipulate. She is dead to me until she earns your forgiveness."
He looked down at my hand, sliding his fingers through mine, his dark eyes filled with a quiet, solemn determination.

"I signed the divorce papers, Sophia," Luke revealed softly.
My heart skipped a beat. "What?"
