Chapter 8 - The Clean Slate

I stared at him, bewildered. "You... you signed them?"
Luke reached into his suit pocket and pulled out the manila envelope. Inside were the divorce documents I had left on his nightstand, signed in bold black ink by his hand.
"If you want to leave me, Sophia, I will not force you to stay," Luke said, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I will give you full custody of our daughter, I will transfer fifty percent of my clean corporate assets into a private trust in your name, and I will move out of the Gold Coast estate today so you and the baby have a safe place to live."
He looked straight into my eyes, holding nothing back.
"I won't use my power to trap you," Luke whispered. "I won't be the monster my mother tried to make me. But I will spend every single day of the rest of my life earning back your trust, if you give me the chance."
I looked down at the signed papers, then at the man sitting beside my hospital bed—the man who had carried me through the rain, who had spent the entire night weeping on his knees, holding my hand through every agonizing moment.
The cold wall he had built around himself for ten years had completely collapsed, leaving behind the raw, vulnerable man I had always known existed beneath the untouchable exterior.
"Luke..." I murmured, my voice soft. "Tear them up."
Luke froze. His eyes widened in absolute shock. "What?"
"Tear up the papers," I repeated, a small, weary smile touching my lips. "We don't need a clean break, Luke. We need a clean start."
Luke stared at me for three long seconds, as if he couldn't believe his own ears. Then, with trembling hands, he ripped the divorce petition down the middle, again and again, until the white pages were reduced to confetti on the hospital floor.
He leaned forward, pressing his forehead against mine, his hot tears falling onto my cheeks as he kissed my lips with a reverent, fierce tenderness that made my heart swell with hope.

"I love you, Sophia," Luke sobbed softly against my mouth. "I love you so much. I'm sorry... I'm so sorry for everything."
"I know," I whispered, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him close. "I know."
