Chapter 1 - SIX DEFIANT WORDS

The first thing Daniel Cross noticed about the waitress was that she wasn't afraid of him.
Everyone else in the restaurant was.
They simply hid it better.
The private dining room at Belladonna was supposed to be a place where powerful people could eat without interruption.
Politicians came through the back entrance.
Executives rented the entire floor.
Celebrities occasionally arrived with bodyguards.
And Daniel Cross came whenever he wanted the room emptied.
Tonight, three tables had been removed from the restaurant so he could dine privately with two business associates.
The other customers had been told the dining room was unavailable.
Nobody complained.
Nobody ever complained when Daniel Cross was involved.
At thirty-eight, Daniel had built a reputation that made even wealthy men lower their voices when they mentioned his name.
He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, a silver watch, and an expression that suggested he had never once needed to ask twice.
Across from him sat Victor Hale, an influential businessman, and Marcus Reed, Daniel's longtime associate.
Dinner had been served.
Wine had been poured.
Everything was proceeding exactly as planned.
Until a glass fell.
Crash.
Everyone turned.
A young waitress stood beside the table.
She was holding a tray with one hand.
The other was pressed against her wrist.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Daniel looked at the broken glass.
Then at her.
"What happened?"
The waitress swallowed.
"One of the glasses slipped."
Victor sighed.
"Get someone else."
The waitress immediately bent down.
"I'll clean it."
Daniel watched her.
She looked exhausted.
Her uniform was slightly wrinkled.
Her shoes were worn.
A small name tag was pinned above her heart.
MAYA.
She was probably twenty-four.
Maybe twenty-five.
Daniel didn't know why he noticed.
He normally didn't notice employees.
Employees were background.
Furniture with uniforms.
People who brought things when asked and disappeared when dismissed.
But Maya didn't disappear.
She stayed on her knees, carefully gathering the broken pieces.
One of the shards cut her finger.
She flinched.
Daniel noticed the blood.
"Leave it."
Maya looked up.
"Sir?"
"Someone else can clean it."
She shook her head.
"I'm responsible for it."
Daniel leaned back.
"You're bleeding."
"It's nothing."
Victor laughed.
"Just leave it, sweetheart."
Maya looked at him.
Something about her expression changed.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Something quieter.
Disappointment.
She stood.
"I'll get another tray."
She turned.
Victor reached out and caught her wrist.
Maya froze.
Daniel's eyes immediately moved to Victor's hand.
"Let her go."
Victor released her.
Maya stepped backward.
"Thank you."
She walked away.
Daniel stared after her.
Marcus leaned closer.
"You know her?"
"No."
"Then why did you care?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Because he didn't know.
A few minutes later, Maya returned carrying another tray.
She placed the plates carefully on the table.
Victor deliberately moved his arm.
His elbow knocked one of the plates onto the floor.
It shattered.
Maya closed her eyes for half a second.
Victor smiled.
"Oops."
Marcus looked away.
Daniel stared at Victor.
"Enough."
Victor laughed.
"I'm just having fun."
Maya bent down.
"I'll replace it."
Victor reached toward her again.
This time, Maya stepped back.
"Please don't."
Victor's smile disappeared.
"Excuse me?"
Maya's voice trembled.
But she didn't retreat.
"I said please don't."
Daniel watched her closely.
Victor stood.
The atmosphere changed instantly.
"You know who you're talking to?"
Maya looked at him.
"No."
Victor's face reddened.
"Maybe you should."
Daniel spoke quietly.
"Sit down, Victor."
Victor hesitated.
Then obeyed.
Maya picked up the broken plate.
She turned to leave.
Daniel noticed something.
Her hands were shaking.
But she was still standing.
Still working.
Still refusing to bow.
A few minutes later, Daniel heard raised voices from the kitchen.
He glanced toward the doorway.
Maya was standing beside the manager.
The manager looked furious.
"You embarrassed one of our best customers."
Maya stared at the floor.
"He grabbed me."
"You should have handled it differently."
"I said I was sorry."
"You don't tell customers what they can and can't do."
Maya looked up.
"What was I supposed to do?"
The manager lowered his voice.
"Apologize."
"I did."
"Again."
Daniel slowly stood.
Marcus noticed.
"Boss?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He walked toward the kitchen.
The manager saw him first.
His face went white.
"Mr. Cross."
Maya turned.
Her eyes widened.
Daniel looked at her.
Then at the manager.
"What happened?"
"Nothing."
Maya shook her head.
"It's fine."
Daniel's gaze returned to her.
"Did he hurt you?"
"No."
"Did Victor?"
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
Daniel's expression hardened.
He looked toward Victor.
Victor had followed them.
"Daniel, this is ridiculous."
Daniel ignored him.
Maya suddenly stepped between them.
"Please."
Daniel looked at her.
She took a breath.
Then said the six words that would change both their lives.
"Touch her again. You'll regret everything."
Silence.
Daniel stared at Maya.
She had said it to Victor.
Not him.
But Victor looked stunned.
The manager looked horrified.
Marcus looked almost amused.
And Daniel?
For the first time in years, someone had stood in front of him without knowing whether they would survive the moment.
Daniel looked at Maya.
"What's your name?"
She glanced at her name tag.
"Maya."
"I know."
He paused.
Then quietly asked:
"Why aren't you afraid?"
Maya looked at the floor.
"I am."
Daniel frowned.
"Then why did you do it?"
Maya finally met his eyes.
"Because being afraid doesn't mean someone else gets to hurt people."
Daniel said nothing.
Those words followed him all the way back to the table.
For the rest of dinner, he barely touched his food.
And when the bill arrived, Daniel did something nobody in the restaurant expected.
He didn't leave a hundred-dollar tip.
He didn't leave a thousand.
He wrote one sentence on the receipt.
Find out why she is working here.
Then he signed his name.
Maya discovered the note after he left.
She stared at it.
She didn't know why Daniel Cross was interested in her.
She didn't know that his curiosity would soon uncover the reason she had taken a $9.50-an-hour job at Belladonna.
She didn't know that someone had been searching for her for months.
And she certainly didn't know that the dangerous man she had confronted that night was about to become the only person standing between her and a secret that could destroy both of them.
Outside, Daniel entered his waiting car.
Marcus followed.
"You've never done that before."
Daniel looked through the window toward the restaurant.
"Done what?"
"Protected a waitress."
Daniel remained silent.
Marcus smiled.
"You're interested in her."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"No."
But his eyes remained fixed on the restaurant door.
And somewhere inside, Maya was still holding the receipt.
Neither of them knew it yet.
May you like
But six words had just changed everything.
Touch her again. You'll regret everything.
