Chapter 5 - The Sky over Manhattan

The dark blue AgustaWestland helicopter sat on the helipad atop the Cole Meridian Tower, its twin turbine engines whirring loudly as the rotor blades chopped through the crisp night air.
Adrian held Lily close inside his heavy cashmere coat, shielding her from the wind as Marcus guided them across the roof.
For Lily, the sensation was overwhelming. The sudden roar of the engines, the smell of aviation fuel, and the strong, firm arms holding her made her grip Adrian’s neck with all her strength.
"It's okay, Lily," Adrian murmured into her hair, stepping inside the luxurious, leather-lined cabin of the aircraft. "You're safe. I've got you."
Claire slid into the seat across from them, quickly pulling the noise-canceling headphones over her ears before handing a small pair to Adrian to place over Lily’s head.
The helicopter lifted off smoothly, banking sharply over the glowing grid of Manhattan. Below them, millions of lights sparkled like fallen stars, but for the first time in his life, Adrian didn't look down at the city he had spent fifteen years trying to conquer.
He looked only at his daughter.
Lily was sitting on his lap, her small hands exploring the smooth leather of the seat, the metallic buckle of the seatbelt, and the fabric of Adrian’s suit jacket.
"Are we flying, Daddy?" she asked, her voice carried clearly through the internal headset system.
Hearing her call him Daddy for the second time sent a fresh wave of warmth through Adrian’s chest. He smoothed down her hair, his fingers feeling the slight dampness from the rain outside.
"Yes, sweetheart," Adrian answered gently. "We're flying. We'll be at the hospital in four minutes."
"Is Mommy going to be okay now?" she asked, her pale blue eyes turning toward his voice, full of desperate hope. "The doctor said her heart was tired because the medicine cost too many pennies."
Adrian squeezed his eyes shut, fighting back the rage that threatened to consume him.
While he had been sitting in three-thousand-dollar suits, dining in private clubs, and managing billions of dollars in liquid assets, Emily had been suffering in a cramped apartment, trying to buy life-saving medication with pennies.
"Your mommy is going to get the best medicine in the world, Lily," Adrian promised, his voice thick with absolute resolve. "I am going to bring the best doctors from Europe, from Asia, from anywhere on this planet. She is never going to worry about pennies again. Neither are you."
Claire reached across the space between their seats, laying her hand over Adrian’s knee. "How could we not have known, Adrian? How could she hide for eight years in the same city?"
"Because she knew my father," Adrian said, his tone darkening with an ancient, bitter realization. "My father threatened her, Claire. Before he died, he told me that Emily had taken a settlement and left for Europe. He lied to me. He systematically cut her off from every artistic grant, every employment opportunity, and forced her into the shadows so she wouldn't 'distract' me from taking over the firm."
Claire gasped, horror washing over her face. "Our father did that?"
"He was a monster who cared about nothing except the Cole Meridian name," Adrian spat coldly. "And for eight years, I turned into him."
He looked down at Lily, who had rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heart.
"But I'm done playing his game," Adrian whispered.
The helicopter began its steep descent toward the rooftop helipad of St. Catherine’s Hospital. The bright red cross of the trauma center flashed through the cabin windows, casting long crimson shadows across Adrian’s face.
Marcus turned around from the front passenger seat. "Mr. Cole, I just spoke with our legal team. Richard Sterling, the CFO, is currently in Ms. Parker’s room on the fourth floor with the transport team. They are attempting to move her to the county ambulance right now."

Adrian’s jaw set into a lethal, terrifying line.
"Tell the pilot to land," Adrian commanded, his voice dropping into an icy register. "And tell security to clear the fourth floor."
