Chapter 7 - The Vigil in the Light

Forty-eight hours later.
The private VIP suite on the top floor of St. Catherine’s Hospital did not look like a place for dying.
Large floor-to-ceiling windows allowed the afternoon sunlight to flood the room, illuminating warm hardwood floors, fresh vases of white peonies, and comfortable leather seating. The sterile hospital odor had been replaced by the faint, comforting scent of lavender and cedar.
The Johns Hopkins medical team had arrived within six hours of Adrian’s order. The advanced cellular filtration protocol had been successfully administered, halting the autoimmune attack on Emily’s remaining kidney function. Her blood pressure had stabilized, her skin had regained its warm, healthy color, and for the first time in three years, she was sleeping deeply without pain.
Adrian sat in an armchair beside her bed, wearing a simple white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. His tablet lay dark and ignored on the coffee table nearby.
For two days, the financial world had been in a state of absolute chaos.
News of Cole Meridian abruptly pulling out of the two-hundred-million-dollar Veloce Tech deal had sent shockwaves through Wall Street. Rumors were swirling that the ruthless CEO had suffered a nervous breakdown or was being ousted by his board.
Adrian didn't care. He hadn't checked the stock market once.
The door to the suite opened quietly.
Claire walked into the room, carrying a paper bag from a local bakery and holding Lily’s small hand.
Lily was wearing a brand-new, plush velvet coat in soft lavender, accompanied by a small pair of comfortable leather shoes that didn't squeak against the floor. In her arms, she held a large, soft teddy bear that Claire had bought for her at FAO Schwarz.
"Daddy?" Lily whispered, her white cane tapping softly against the rug.
Adrian immediately stood up and walked over to them, scooping Lily up into his arms and kissing her cheek. "Hey, sweetheart. How was the park?"
"It was noisy!" Lily giggled, hugging her teddy bear tight. "Aunt Claire let me feed the birds by the water! They made silly sounds!"
"She's amazing, Adrian," Claire said softly, watching her brother gently smooth down Lily’s hair. "She memorized the layout of the Central Park path after walking it just twice."
"She gets her intelligence from her mother," Adrian smiled, looking back toward the bed.
Emily shifted beneath the soft duvet, her eyelids fluttering open as she heard their voices.
"Lily...?" Emily called out softly, her voice much stronger than it had been two days ago.
"Mommy's awake!" Lily squealed happily.
Adrian set Lily down on the edge of the bed, and the little girl immediately snuggled into Emily’s arms. Emily pulled her daughter close, breathing in her hair, before looking up at Adrian.
"You look like you haven't slept in two days," Emily observed gently, reaching out her hand.
Adrian took her hand, pulling a chair up so he could sit directly beside her head. "I didn't want to close my eyes. Every time I do, I'm afraid I'll wake up eight years ago and find you gone again."
Emily’s eyes softened with immense warmth. "I'm not going anywhere, Adrian. The doctors said the new treatment is working. They think I'll be able to go home in a few weeks."
"Home," Adrian repeated the word, feeling its weight. He looked at Emily, then down at Lily, who was busy showing her mother the soft ears of her new teddy bear.
"I bought a house yesterday," Adrian said quietly.
Claire grinned from the corner of the room, while Emily blinked in surprise. "You bought a house?"
"A home," Adrian corrected himself. "In Connecticut. It’s an old stone estate near the water, with ten acres of gardens, an art studio with floor-to-ceiling north light for you, and a indoor heated pool for Lily. No sky scrapers, no boardrooms, no corporate noise."
Emily stared at him, tears welling in her eyes again. "Adrian... your firm... Cole Meridian..."
"I resigned as CEO this morning," Adrian announced calmly.
Claire gasped, though a proud smile instantly broke across her face. "Adrian! You actually did it?"
"I turned executive control over to Claire and the management committee," Adrian explained, looking only at Emily. "I kept my majority equity stake, but I am done managing corporate liquidations. I spent fifteen years trying to prove to my dead father that I was strong enough to run his empire. I don't need to prove anything to anyone anymore."
He leaned down, resting his forehead against Emily’s.
"All I want is to be a father to our daughter, and the man I was supposed to be for you."
Emily reached up, her fingers sliding into his dark hair, pulling him down into a deep, loving kiss that erased eight long years of pain, coldness, and separation.
Lily reached out with her small hands, touching both of their faces as they kissed, her bright, happy laugh filling the sunny room.
"Does this mean we're going to live together forever, Daddy?" Lily asked innocently.
May you like
Adrian pulled back, looking at his daughter, then at the woman he loved.
"Forever, Lily," Adrian promised, his voice clear and absolute. "Forever."
