Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Light

Later that night, after the guests had departed and the stars had filled the vast, dark canopy over the ocean, Adrian walked softly down the second-floor hallway of the main house.

He stopped outside Lily’s bedroom door.

The door was standing slightly ajar, allowing a warm beam of amber light from the hallway nightlamp to spill across the carpet.

Adrian pushed the door open quietly.

Lily lay fast asleep in her large wooden canopy bed, wrapped in a plush white duvet. Barnaby the golden retriever was curled up into a tight ball at the foot of the bed, snoring softly.

Beside the bed sat Emily, holding a small storybook in her lap, reading the final lines of a fairy tale in a soft, soothing whisper.

Emily looked up as Adrian stepped into the room. She smiled, setting the book down on the nightstand, and stood up to meet him.

They stood together beside their daughter’s bed, watching the gentle, rhythmic rise and fall of Lily’s chest. On the nightstand beside the lamp lay Lily’s white mobility cane, resting quietly beside her missing-button teddy bear and the old laminated pass that had brought them all together.

Adrian reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind Lily’s small ear.

The little girl shifted in her sleep, a soft, content smile spreading across her face.

"Daddy..." Lily murmured softly in her sleep, clutching her teddy bear tighter against her chest. "We're home."

Adrian leaned down and pressed a warm, gentle kiss to his daughter’s forehead.

"Yes, we are, sweetheart," Adrian whispered back, his heart completely full, completely healed, and entirely at peace. "We're home."

He put his arm around Emily’s waist, pulling her close against his side, and together they stepped out of the room, leaving the door open just enough for the warm light to guide the way.
