Chapter 5 - THE MERCER COUNTER-ATTACK

By Sunday evening, the snowstorm had returned to Chicago, wrapping the city skyline in a shroud of white mist.
Inside Adrian’s private study at his residential estate in Gold Coast, a massive floor-to-ceiling map of the Halston Museum hung on the wall.
Rachel sat at a long mahogany table covered in corporate registries, digital server logs, and financial flowcharts.
Beside her sat Elena Rostova—Adrian’s senior legal strategist—and Mateo, who was reviewing security blueprints of the Halston’s private vault basement.
Adrian walked into the room, carrying two glasses of dark red wine. He handed one to Rachel, resting his hand briefly on the back of her chair.
His touch was warm, steady, and increasingly comforting to her over the last forty-eight hours.
“Harrison Ward’s board meeting is scheduled for ten o'clock tomorrow morning,” Elena explained, tapping a tablet screen. “Grant Holloway is planning to present the final Mercer acquisition file to the board, declare the nine paintings authenticated, and request immediate wire transfer approval to the Freeport account in Zurich.”
“And once the wire transfer clears,” Rachel added, “Grant triggers the automated security audit that flags my password as the source of the altered certificates.”
“Correct,” Elena nodded. “It’s a thirty-minute window between the wire transfer and the audit flag.”
Adrian took a slow sip of his wine, looking at the map of the museum.
“So we change the window,” Adrian said simply.
Rachel looked up at him. “How?”
“Grant’s entire scheme relies on the physical Mercer paintings staying inside the Halston vault until the wire clears,” Adrian explained, turning to face her. “He needs the board to believe the paintings are securely stored downstairs.”
Adrian pulled a slender silver drive from his pocket, laying it on the table.
“Tonight at midnight, Mateo’s team is replacing the nine Mercer canvases in the museum vault with nine identical high-resolution digital reproductions created by our forgery restoration team in Milan.”
Rachel’s eyes widened. “You have a forgery team in Milan?”
“I have many things, Ms. Monroe,” Adrian said with a dry, elegant smirk. “Including a custom-built digital virus that Elena’s tech team will upload to the museum server at nine-thirty tomorrow morning.”
“What does the virus do?” Rachel asked.
“It doesn't destroy the data,” Elena answered with a sharp grin. “It redirects every audit log generated by your password over the last three weeks back to Grant Holloway’s private laptop—complete with time-stamped location tags showing he was using his personal device inside his own apartment.”
Rachel sat back in her chair, a deep, satisfying sense of justice swelling in her chest.
“He framed me using my credentials,” Rachel realized. “We’re reframing him using his own physical location.”
“Exactly,” Adrian said, stepping closer to her chair. “And when he stands up in front of the board tomorrow at ten o'clock to request his twelve-million-dollar wire, the federal art crime unit—who I personally tipped off two hours ago—will be waiting in the gallery hall outside.”
Rachel looked up into Adrian’s grey-blue eyes.
The danger of what they were doing was immense. If Grant discovered the swap before tomorrow morning, or if Harrison Ward’s private security caught Mateo’s team inside the vault, all of them could face federal prison time.
Yet looking at Adrian Moretti, she felt zero fear.
She felt a electric, dangerous thrill that made her blood hum with life.
“What if Grant confronts me before the board meeting?” Rachel asked.
Adrian leaned down, his face inches from hers, his voice dropping into a low, fiercely protective whisper.
“If Grant Holloway so much as raises his voice to you tomorrow, Rachel,” Adrian said, his dark eyes burning with absolute truth, “he won't make it to the board meeting at all.”
Rachel looked at his sharp jawline, the thin scar across his eyebrow, and felt an unexpected, powerful surge of attraction pull at her heart.
She reached out, her fingers gently touching his wrist.
“Thank you, Adrian,” she whispered.

Adrian stared at her for a long, electric second, his hand covering hers, before leaning down and pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her cheek.
“Get some sleep, Rachel,” Adrian said softly. “Tomorrow, we watch the dominoes fall.”
