Chapter 6 - THE BOARDROOM TRAP

At 9:45 a.m. on Monday morning, the grand mahogany boardroom on the top floor of the Halston Museum was filled with fifteen prominent board members, corporate lawyers, and city officials.

Harrison Ward sat at the head of the long table, dressed in a bespoke grey suit, looking every bit the ruler of Chicago’s high society.

Sitting to his right was Grant Holloway, looking sharp, polished, and oozing unshakeable confidence. Beside him sat Celeste Ward, wearing a emerald green dress, smiling proudly at her future husband.

Rachel walked into the room, wearing a sharp black suit and high heels, carrying a thick leather presentation folder.

Grant’s eyes flicked to her as she entered. A subtle, condescending smirk touched his lips before he quickly hid it beneath his professional smile.

“Ah, Rachel,” Grant said smoothly, standing up to greet her in front of the board. “Thank you for bringing the final provenance binders for the Mercer collection.”

“Of course, Grant,” Rachel said, her voice completely calm, professional, and composed. She set the leather folder on the center table in front of Harrison Ward.

Harrison Ward cleared his throat, tapping his pen against his glass.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Harrison announced, his voice booming across the quiet room. “Before we begin our formal vote on the new Managing Director position, Mr. Holloway will present the authentication report for the twelve-million-dollar Mercer collection acquisition.”

Grant stood up, stepping to the head of the room near the digital projector screen.

“Thank you, Chairman,” Grant began, clicking his remote to display the first image of the nine canvases on the screen. “I am proud to report that our senior provenance specialist, Rachel Monroe, has fully verified the chain of custody for all nine masterworks.”

He looked at Rachel, offering a fake, generous smile.

“Rachel’s hard work on this project has been exemplary,” Grant added, his voice dripping with false praise. “Every digital seal and export permit has been verified through her administrative portal.”

Rachel stood near the back of the room, her arms folded across her chest, watching him dig his own grave with every word he spoke.

“Therefore,” Grant continued, clicking to the final financial slide, “I request immediate board authorization to execute the twelve-million-dollar wire transfer to Mercer Heritage Holdings’ holding account in Zurich.”

Harrison Ward raised his hand. “All in favor?”

Before the board members could raise their hands, the heavy oak doors at the rear of the boardroom burst open.

Special Agent Marcus Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Art Crime Team stepped into the room, flanked by four uniformed federal officers and two state prosecutors.

The entire boardroom went completely silent with shock.

Harrison Ward stood up, his face flushing with immediate rage. “What is the meaning of this intrusion?! This is a private executive meeting!”

Agent Vance walked straight down the center of the room, stopping directly in front of Grant Holloway.

“Harrison Ward,” Agent Vance announced clearly, “we are executing a federal search and seizure warrant for the Halston Museum’s Mercer acquisition files.”

Grant’s face turned bright red. “This is ridiculous! I am the incoming Managing Director! On what possible grounds are you disrupting this meeting?!”

Agent Vance looked at Grant with cold, professional disdain.

“On the grounds that forty-five minutes ago, federal agents intercepted Container 409 at the Chicago docks,” Vance said. “Inside were the original nine stolen Mercer canvases—including a lost Winslow Homer—being illegally exported to a shell company in Geneva.”

Celeste Ward gasped, stepping away from Grant as if he had caught fire.

Grant stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward Rachel.

“That... that’s impossible!” Grant panicked, pointing a trembling finger at Rachel. “If there’s a provenance discrepancy, it was created by Rachel Monroe! She holds the administrative credentials for those files! She forged the export permits!”

Rachel stepped forward smoothly, her hazel eyes locked onto Grant with ice-cold disdain.

“I didn't forge anything, Grant,” Rachel said clearly, her voice echoing through the silent room. “And if the FBI checks the server logs right now, they’ll see that the digital virus uploaded to the system twenty minutes ago just unmasked your primary IP address.”

Agent Vance pulled a tablet from his coat, reading the live forensic feed provided by Elena Rostova.

“IP address confirmed,” Vance stated, looking at Grant. “Every single altered certificate was generated from your private terminal at 1412 Lake Shore Drive while Ms. Monroe was off-duty.”

Grant went dead pale. His knees buckled slightly, his hands gripping the mahogany table to keep from collapsing.

“No...” Grant gasped, looking toward Harrison Ward. “Harrison... help me! You know about the Zurich account!”

Harrison Ward’s eyes widened in horror as every board member turned to look at him.

“I know nothing about your illegal schemes, Holloway!” Harrison spat instantly, backing away from Grant with complete disgust. “You are fired from this institution effective immediately!”

Agent Vance stepped forward, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around Grant Holloway’s wrist with a loud, metallic CLICK.

“Grant Holloway,” Vance declared. “You are under arrest for federal art theft, wire fraud, racketeering, and framing an officer of the institution.”

As the federal officers dragged a screaming, sobbing Grant Holloway out of the boardroom into the public hallway, Celeste Ward collapsed into her chair, hiding her face in her hands.

Rachel stood in the center of the quiet room, her head held high, watching her former fiancé being led away to face thirty years in a federal prison cell.

She turned her gaze toward the rear glass windows of the boardroom overlooking the harbor.

Standing near the elevator bank downstairs, dressed in his charcoal wool coat, stood Adrian Moretti.

He looked up toward the top floor, raised his glass of coffee in a silent, victorious toast, and offered her a slow, beautiful smile.
