Chapter 7 - THE REFORMATION OF THE HALSTON

Two weeks later.
The fallout from the Mercer scandal swept through Chicago’s elite social and cultural circles like a hurricane.
Harrison Ward was forced to resign as chairman of the Halston board after federal prosecutors uncovered six million dollars in offshore bribe payments connected to his private real estate holdings.
Celeste Ward fled to Europe to avoid the relentless media coverage.
Grant Holloway sat in a federal holding facility in downtown Chicago, unable to post his five-million-dollar bail after his personal assets were frozen by state prosecutors.
On a crisp, sunny afternoon, the remaining board members of the Halston Museum held an emergency press conference in the central atrium.
The interim board chairman stepped up to the podium, addressing dozens of news cameras and journalists.
“Today,” the chairman announced, “the Halston Museum begins a new chapter of absolute transparency, historical integrity, and ethical leadership. We are proud to announce the appointment of our new Chief Curator and Director of Provenance—Ms. Rachel Monroe!”
The auditorium erupted into warm, enthusiastic applause.
Rachel stepped up to the podium, wearing a tailored cream-colored suit, looking out over the smiling faces of her colleagues, her restoration team, and the media.
“History is not a commodity to be bought, sold, or stolen in the dark,” Rachel said into the microphone, her voice steady and confident. “History belongs to the public. And as long as I direct this institution, every piece of art in our galleries will carry a truth that no dishonest man can ever erase.”
As the press conference ended and reporters rushed forward to take photos, Rachel caught sight of a large, beautiful arrangement of white orchids delivered to her backstage dressing room.
Tucked inside the flowers was a small, elegant black card with silver lettering:
TO THE CHIEF CURATOR — WHO LOOKS AT OAK GRAIN PANELS AND DESTROYS EMPIRES.
DINNER AT EIGHT. MY CAR IS WAITING DOWNSTAIRS.
May you like
— A.M.
Rachel picked up the card, pressing it against her chest, a warm, radiant smile breaking across her face.
