Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the System

Celeste let out a sharp, strangled gasp and collapsed onto her knees, her heavy designer dress pooling around her on the kitchen floor.
"It wasn't me..." she whimpered, her hands covering her face as she began to sob hysterically. "It wasn't my idea! Eleanor was the one working the night shift! She was the one who brought the baby home!"
"Mother, shut up!" Adrian screamed, losing all control, his polished corporate facade completely shattering into ugly, panicked rage. He lunged toward Celeste, raising his hand as if to strike her into silence. "Shut your mouth!"
Before Adrian’s hand could descend, Gabriel’s lead security operative moved with terrifying speed. He stepped between Adrian and Celeste, grabbed Adrian’s wrist in a steel grip, twisted it behind his back, and slammed him face-first onto the mahogany dining table.
The heavy thud of Adrian’s face striking the wood echoed through the room, accompanied by a sharp groan of pain.
"Don't move," the operative warned in a flat, emotionless voice, pinning Adrian’s shoulder to the table with a heavy knee.
"Gabriel!" Adrian screamed, his cheek pressed flat against the polished mahogany, his eyes bulging with agony and humiliation. "This is a setup! She’s crazy! She forged those documents! She’s been manipulating my accounts to frame me because she wanted my money!"
"Your money?" I laughed—a dry, bitter sound that held no joy. "Adrian, you don't have any money. Every asset you think you own—this house, your cars, your watch, your investment portfolio—was purchased with funds embezzled from Halcyon Global. And every single transaction bears your digital thumbprint."
I turned to Gabriel, whose hand was resting gently on my shoulder. His touch was hesitant, as if he were afraid that if he pressed too hard, I would vanish into thin air like a dream he had chased for thirty years.
"Gabriel," I said softly. "In my bedroom upstairs, hidden inside the false back of the closet floorboard, there is an encrypted drive. It contains thirty gigabytes of raw banking data, wire transfers, audio recordings, and legal documents. It proves that thirty years ago, Celeste and her sister kidnapped your daughter to hold her as leverage against you during the initial public offering of Halcyon’s predecessor company."
Gabriel’s face turned white with a mixture of old rage and new revelation. "The 1996 IPO..." he whispered, his mind racing back three decades. "I received an anonymous letter three days before the public launch. They said if I didn't surrender forty percent of my voting shares to a private trust, my daughter would be killed. I refused to be blackmailed... I called the police... and that night... she vanished from her crib."
"They got scared," I continued, my voice steady despite the weight of the story I was finally telling aloud. "The FBI got involved too quickly. The perimeter search was too tight. Celeste and Eleanor couldn't collect the ransom without getting caught, so Eleanor took me out of the state, kept me in a basement for two weeks, and when the heat became too intense, she dumped me on the steps of Saint Anne’s Children’s Home with the necklace still around my neck."
"And then they waited," Gabriel realized, his voice trembling with deep, dark realization. "They waited thirty years..."
"They waited until I was twenty-six," I said, looking down at Adrian, who was sobbing silently into the wood of the table. "They tracked me down through Saint Anne’s records. Adrian didn't meet me by accident at that accounting seminar four years ago. He was sent by his mother. They knew who I was all along. Their plan was simple: Adrian would marry me, isolate me, control me, and eventually, when the time was right, bring me forward as the lost Vale heiress—using me as a puppet to claim my share of your estate."
The room was so quiet that the soft rain beginning to fall outside sounded like a roar against the windowpanes.
The twelve senior executives of Halcyon Global stood in absolute, paralyzed horror. They were looking at a masterclass in long-range criminal predation—and the absolute, methodical execution of a revenge scheme that had taken four years to mature.
Gabriel looked down at Adrian, his steel-blue eyes turning completely dead.
"You took my child," Gabriel whispered, the words carrying a weight that seemed to crush the very air out of the room. "You stole her life. You kept her in the dark. You forced her to wear an apron in her own home. And then you struck her."

Gabriel looked up at his security team.
"Take him down to the basement," Gabriel commanded. "And bring the mother."
