Chapter 5 - The Basement Interrogation

At midnight, the rain outside had turned into a steady, relentless downpour that drummed against the reinforced glass windows of the estate.

Down in the custom-built wine cellar beneath the garage—a room with soundproofed concrete walls and a heavy iron door—Adrian and Celeste sat strapped to two wooden armchairs.

They weren't beaten. Gabriel was a man of cold, surgical precision, not a brute. But the psychological reality of their situation was far more terrifying than physical violence. They were trapped in the private stronghold of a billionaire whose daughter they had stolen, framed, and abused, surrounded by four silent, armed operatives who answered only to Gabriel Vale.

The heavy iron door creaked open.

Gabriel stepped into the room, followed by me. I had changed out of the black dress and the apron, now wearing a simple, high-end wool sweater and dark trousers that Gabriel’s security team had fetched from a boutique down the street.

Adrian looked up frantically, his hair wild, his eyes bloodshot, his expensive suit rumpled and stained with sweat.

"Mara! Mara, please!" Adrian begged, his voice high and shrill, tears leaking down his cheeks. "Talk to him! Tell him to let us go! We can work this out! I love you! You know I love you! I was just stressed tonight because of the job—I didn't mean to hit you! I've never hit you before!"

I stood four feet away from him, my arms crossed over my chest, looking at him as if he were an insect trapped under a glass jar.

"You hit me three times last year, Adrian," I said, my voice flat and completely devoid of emotion. "Once when I asked why your mother was moving fifty thousand dollars out of our joint savings. Once when I didn't clean the garage fast enough. And once when I tried to visit my old roommate from college."

Adrian’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "I... I was trying to protect you! I was stressed!"

"You weren't stressed, Adrian," I said. "You were practicing control. You thought if you hit me enough, if you isolated me enough, I would lose the capacity to think for myself. You thought a broken woman wouldn't notice when you used her maiden name to register shell accounts in Panama."

Gabriel stepped forward, standing right in front of Celeste.

Celeste shrank back into her chair, her eyes fixed on the floor, shivering uncontrollably.

"Celeste," Gabriel said softly. "Where is your sister Eleanor?"

Celeste didn't answer. She pulled her knees together, her breath hitching in her throat.

"Where is she?" Gabriel repeated, his voice dropping into that terrifying, low register. "If you answer me truthfully right now, I will instruct my legal team not to file federal kidnapping charges against you in state court, which carries a mandatory life sentence without parole. You will only face the financial fraud charges."

Celeste’s head snapped up. Her eyes were wide with a desperate, animalistic greed for survival. "She... she’s in Costa Rica!" Celeste blurted out, betraying her own sister without a second of hesitation. "She’s living in San José under the name Clara Miller! She’s been living off the annuity transfers Adrian sends her every month!"

"Mother!" Adrian screamed in horror. "Shut up!"

"Shut up, Adrian!" Celeste shrieked back at her son, her mask of maternal protectiveness completely vanishing under the threat of life imprisonment. "You dragged me into this! You were the one who wanted to hire that hitman last week when you thought someone was auditing the Halcyon accounts! You were the one who said we should eliminate Mara once the trust transfer was complete!"

A cold shockwave went through the room.

I felt my chest tighten, but my face remained an unreadable stone mask. "A hitman, Adrian?"

Adrian looked up at me, his face turning a sickening shade of green as he realized his own mother had just sealed his death warrant in a federal court of law.

"I didn't... I didn't hire anyone..." Adrian stammered, his eyes darting frantically between Gabriel and me. "I was just talking! It was just a thought!"

Gabriel turned to his lead security operative. "Did you record that?"

The operative held up a sleek digital recording device that had been running since we entered the room. "Clear audio, sir. Federal standard."

"Good," Gabriel said flatly. He turned his back on Adrian and Celeste, stepping toward the iron door. "Transfer the audio file to the FBI Field Director in Chicago. Tell him we have the location of Eleanor Vance in Costa Rica, and request an immediate extradition order through the State Department."

"Gabriel! Please!" Adrian screamed, thrashing against the leather straps securing him to the chair as the guards stepped forward to secure the door. "Mara! Forgive me! I'm your husband! We were married in a church! You swore an oath!"

I stopped at the threshold of the iron door, turning my head to look back at him one last time.

May you like

"I swore an oath to a man named Adrian Vance," I said softly. "A man who pretended to be a loving partner. But you aren't a man, Adrian. You're just a thief who stayed in my life four years too long."

The heavy iron door swung shut with a loud, hollow thud, cutting off his screams forever.
