Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Empire

By 6:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose over a world that had completely inverted.
The front page of the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and every major financial news outlet carried the exact same breaking headline:
"MASSIVE EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME UNCOVERED AT HALCYON GLOBAL: REGIONAL DIRECTOR ARRESTED IN 30-YEAR KIDNAPPING AND CORPORATE FRAUD CONSPIRACY."
The news sent shockwaves through Wall Street. Halcyon Global’s stock dipped three percent at market open, but quickly rallied and surged twelve percent higher by noon as the public realized that Gabriel Vale had successfully purged a catastrophic internal parasite and recovered sixty-four million dollars in stolen assets—all thanks to his long-lost daughter.
I spent the morning sitting in the master conference room on the 80th floor of Halcyon Tower in Manhattan.
The glass walls overlooked the sweeping vista of Central Park, bathed in the sharp, clear light of early spring. I was surrounded by a team of twenty high-powered attorneys, forensic accountants, and federal agents from the Department of Justice.
My laptop was plugged into the main projection screen at the head of the room, displaying the intricate, brilliant map of financial evidence I had constructed over eighteen months of quiet, dangerous labor.
"Miss Vale," said Special Agent Miller of the FBI, holding a thick file folder stuffed with signed search warrants. "Your documentation is... frankly, the most immaculate forensic audit I have seen in twenty years of federal service. You didn't just trace the money; you mapped out every single communication, IP address, and physical drop box used by the Vance family since 2020."
"I had four years of quiet nights, Agent Miller," I replied, taking a sip of black coffee from a porcelain cup. "When a man treats his wife like an invisible piece of furniture, he forgets that furniture has eyes and ears."
Gabriel sat at the head of the table, watching me with an expression of quiet, overwhelmed pride. Every few minutes, his eyes would drift to my face, as if he were still confirming that I was real, that I was sitting in his boardroom, that the thirty-year nightmare was finally over.
Marcus Sterling walked into the conference room, holding a tablet.
"The Costa Rican authorities, working alongside our private security team, have apprehended Eleanor Vance in San José," Marcus announced. "She is currently being transported to the international airport under armed guard. She will be on a federal flight to Chicago by 4:00 PM today."
"And Adrian and Celeste?" Gabriel asked, his voice hardening instantly.
"They have been formally remanded into federal custody without bail," Marcus answered. "The District Attorney has added charges of attempted murder for hire, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, interstate kidnapping, and domestic abuse. Given the weight of the digital evidence provided by Mara, their legal team is already advising them to take a full guilty plea to avoid a federal trial."
"No pleas," Gabriel said flatly. "I want them to face every single count in open court. I want the world to see what they are."
"I agree," I said, setting my coffee cup down. "I want to stand on the witness stand, Gabriel. I want to look Adrian in the eye while the federal prosecutor reads his sentence."

Gabriel reached across the table, taking my hand in his. His grip was warm, strong, and reassuring—the touch of a father who would never let me fall again.
"Then that is exactly what we will do, my daughter," Gabriel whispered.
