Chapter 4 - The Mouse Trap

The next morning, Adrian’s panic reached a boiling point.

My phone, which I had left on Gabriel’s secure server network, received forty-seven missed calls and dozens of frantic text messages from Adrian and Celeste.

“Where are you?” “Come home right now or I swear to God I’ll ruin you!” “Mr. Vale isn't answering his phone. What did you tell him?” “Mara, pick up! We have to clear this misunderstanding!”

I didn't reply to a single message. Instead, I sat in Gabriel’s private office with a team of tier-one digital security experts, watching Adrian’s every move through the surveillance feeds we had secretly installed in his home office months ago.

On the screen, Adrian was pacing back and forth, sweating profusely through his silk shirt. Celeste was sitting on the leather sofa, biting her nails down to the quick.

“He’s going to execute the final transfer early,” Richard Vance observed, pointing at the monitor. “Look at his screen. He’s opening the Aegis Trust portal.”

“He has to,” I said. “He knows Gabriel is suspicious. He wants to secure the forty million and flee the country before the regulatory authorities freeze his accounts.”

“Can we stop the transfer right now?” Gabriel asked.

“We could,” I said, turning to my father. “But if we stop it now, Marcus Cole can claim he knew nothing about it. He will throw Adrian and Celeste under the bus, pretend to be an innocent victim, and walk away with his pension and reputation intact. We need Marcus to sign off on the authorization personally.”

To complete a transfer of forty million dollars from Halcyon’s core reserve, two executive keys were required: Adrian’s financial director code and Marcus Cole’s master clearance code.

“Marcus won't sign it unless he feels safe,” I continued. “We need to make them think Gabriel is distracted by the discovery of his daughter.”

Gabriel caught on immediately. He picked up his desk phone and called Marcus Cole on a speaker line.

“Marcus,” Gabriel said, perfectly mimicking the voice of a grief-stricken, overwhelmed father. “I won't be able to attend the preliminary board meeting today. I’m at the hospital with the girl... Mara. We are running DNA tests. My mind is completely shattered.”

On the other end of the line, Marcus’s voice was smooth, soothing, and utterly fake. “Gabriel, my old friend... take all the time you need. This is unbelievable news! Is it really Aurelia?”

“We don't know yet,” Gabriel lied expertly. “The results won't be back until tomorrow evening. In the meantime, I’m putting you in full control of the financial clearance for tonight’s Charity Gala.”

“You can trust me, Gabriel,” Marcus said, a subtle gleam of victory hiding in his tone. “I will make sure everything runs seamlessly.”

When the line went dead, Richard burst out laughing. “He swallowed the bait whole.”

“Now,” I said, opening my laptop, “let’s prepare the trap for the Gala.”

For the next six hours, I worked alongside Gabriel’s legal and technical teams. We created a mirror server that looked identical to Halcyon’s central banking portal. When Adrian and Marcus executed the transfer tonight, the money wouldn't go to their Cayman Islands accounts—it would be redirected into a court-monitored escrow account managed directly by the Federal District Prosecutor’s office.

Additionally, every keystroke, every voice authorization, and every digital signature would be broadcast live onto the main display screens during the Gala’s keynote presentation.

At 4:00 PM, a delivery arrived at Gabriel’s estate. It was a long black box from a haute couture designer in Paris.

Inside was a breath-taking emerald green silk gown, accompanied by a choker made of platinum and diamonds designed to cover the faint bruise on my neck.

Gabriel stood by the door as I looked at the dress.

“Green was your mother’s favorite color,” he said gently. “She always said it represented renewal. Tonight, my daughter, you step out of the shadows.”

I touched the smooth silk, feeling the strength returning to my hands. For four years, Adrian had forced me to wear faded rags, to hide my eyes, to bow my head.

Tonight, I was going to wear emerald silk, and I was going to watch him crumble.
