Chapter 5 - The Gala of Reckoning

The Grand Ballroom of the Royal Meridian Hotel was packed with six hundred of the most influential figures in finance, technology, and politics. Crystal chandeliers cast golden light over tables adorned with white orchids and silver champagne buckets.
Adrian stood near the main stage, wearing a tailored tuxedo, trying his best to look like a man in total control. But his pale skin and twitching fingers betrayed his terror. Next to him, Celeste wore a burgundy gown, her hands trembling as she held a glass of champagne. Her eyes kept darting toward the main entrance.
“Where is Marcus?” Celeste whispered urgently to her son.
“He’s upstairs in the VIP suite checking the server link,” Adrian muttered back, wiping sweat from his forehead. “As soon as the light shows green on the Gala donation counter, he inputs his master key. The money moves, and our private jet leaves at midnight from the private hangar.”
“What about the girl?” Celeste hissed. “What if Gabriel’s DNA test comes back positive before we get to the airport?”
“It doesn't matter!” Adrian growled under his breath. “Once we have forty million in liquidity, Gabriel can’t touch us. We’ll be in a non-extradition country before sunrise.”
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.
The chatter in the room instantly died down.
Gabriel Vale entered the hall. But he was not walking alone.
On his arm was a young woman with her dark hair swept up in a flawless chignon, wearing an emerald green gown that shimmered like liquid sunlight. Around her neck was a delicate silver crescent moon pendant, framed by a collar of flashing diamonds.
She walked with absolute grace, her head held high, her spine straight as steel.
Adrian’s glass slipped from his fingers and shattered on the marble floor.
“Mara...?” he breathed, his voice choking in his throat.
Celeste staggered back against a table, her face turning as white as the linens. “No... it’s impossible...”
The woman walking alongside the billionaire founder of Halcyon Global was not the quiet, bruised servant girl who had scrubbed their floors twelve hours ago. She was radiant, powerful, and utterly terrifying.
Gabriel led me straight toward the center of the room, ignoring the murmurs and gasps echoing around us. Guests parted like the Red Sea as we walked.
We stopped right in front of Adrian and Celeste.
Adrian tried to speak, his lips quivering. “Mr. Vale... what is the meaning of this? Why is she wearing... why is she here?”
I stepped forward, looking down at the fragments of broken glass at his feet.
“You always told me I belonged on the floor, Adrian,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the silent crowd. “I thought I’d come to watch you pick up the pieces.”
“You crazy bitch!” Celeste shrieked, losing her control entirely. “Security! Get this woman out of here! She’s an imposter! She stole that necklace!”
Gabriel stepped up beside me, his voice booming across the ballroom like thunder.
“Security will not touch her,” Gabriel announced into the microphone near the podium. “Because the woman standing next to me is not an imposter. She is Aurelia Vale... my long-lost daughter and the sole heiress to Halcyon Global!”
Gasps erupted through the room. Camera flashes began going off like light bulbs. Journalists who had been invited to cover the charity event rushed forward, pointing their lenses at us.
Adrian backed away, bumping into a waiter. “No... no, she’s just Mara... she’s my wife!”
“A marriage built on fraud, coercion, and domestic abuse is legally void,” I said calmly, pulling a document from my clutch bag and tossing it onto the table in front of him. “Here are the emergency annulment papers filed two hours ago by the State Supreme Court. You are no longer my husband, Adrian. You are just a suspect.”

At that exact moment, the massive LED screens behind the main stage flashed bright red.
The standard charity presentation vanished, replaced by a live digital audit monitor.
