Chapter 6 - The Delivery

“Step away from my patient immediately!” Dr. Sarah Lin charged into the room, flanked by two armed New York City Police officers and the hospital’s chief legal counsel, Brenda Sterling.

Dr. Vance froze, his hand hovering inches from my IV line.

“Arthur,” Brenda Sterling said coldly, stepping between Dr. Vance and my bed. “You have no active clinical privileges on this floor, and Mrs. Vance has explicitly revoked your access under a court-ordered protective injunction signed five hours ago. If you touch that IV, you will be escorted out of this building in handcuffs.”

Dr. Vance’s face flushed dark red. He slowly lowered the syringe, staring at the chief counsel. “This is family business, Brenda—”

“This is a public hospital bound by federal law, Dr. Vance,” Dr. Lin interjected, snapping on sterile gloves. “Officers, clear this room now.”

The two NYPD officers stepped forward, forcefully escorting Charles Vane and Dr. Vance out into the hallway, slamming the heavy double doors behind them.

The room settled into an intense, focused calm.

“Clara, look at me,” Dr. Lin said gently, kneeling beside my bed and taking my hand. “Your fetal monitor shows the baby is in mild distress due to early placental detachment. We cannot wait. We need to perform an emergency Cesarean section right now.”

Tears overflowed down my cheeks, but I didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Do it,” I said, my voice steady despite the agony in my abdomen. “Save my son.”

At 1:14 AM on Friday morning, beneath the bright operating lights of Suite 4, the sound of a sharp, clear, triumphant cry echoed through the room.

“He’s here, Clara,” Dr. Lin announced, a radiant smile breaking across her face as she lifted a tiny, red, wriggling baby boy into the air. “Four pounds, eight ounces. Strong lungs. He is breathing entirely on his own.”

They laid Noah against my chest for three golden seconds. His tiny fingers curled around my thumb, his soft warmth pressed against my skin.

“Hello, Noah,” I whispered, tears spilling onto his dark hair. “You are safe now. I promise you.”

The neonatal team gently wrapped him in a heated blanket and placed him in an incubator to transport him to the NICU for monitoring.

As they wheeled my son into the secure nursery, Elena stepped into the recovery room, holding a newly printed court document.

“Judge Abernathy just signed the supplemental emergency order from her home,” Elena whispered, kissing my forehead. “Full temporary legal and physical custody of Noah Vance is assigned exclusively to you. Dominic isn't allowed within five hundred feet of the NICU floor.”

I laid back against the pillows, clutching my son’s tiny blanket against my heart, letting out a long, shuddering breath of absolute victory.
