Chapter 7 - The Italian Wire

For six days, Noah thrived inside the Columbia NICU, gaining weight rapidly and showing zero signs of the hereditary cardiac condition Dominic had used as a legal threat.
On the seventh day, I was discharged to Elena’s home, equipped with a secure private transport detail and full medical clearance.
Dominic was crumbling. The frozen accounts had crippled his ability to pay his corporate debts, and the ongoing public exposure regarding Aegis Maritime had drawn the attention of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
At 3:00 PM on Thursday, Elena and I met with Federal Prosecutor Richard Vance—no relation to Dominic—inside the Federal Courthouse at Foley Square.
Sitting across from us was an unexpected ally: Marco Bellini, a senior forensic investigator from the Italian Guardia di Finanza, who had flown into New York thirty-six hours earlier.
“Mrs. Vance,” Investigator Bellini said, opening a heavy leather binder filled with Italian financial intelligence records. “We have been tracking your husband’s offshore activities in Milan and Naples for over eighteen months.”
I blinked in surprise. “Naples?”
“Dominic Vance was not simply trying to steal your mother’s trust,” Bellini explained, sliding a series of bank statements across the desk. “He was using her Swiss trust structure to launder illegal real estate capital derived from fraudulent municipal contracts in Southern Italy, operated through a shell entity managed by Vanessa Cole’s uncle in Rome.”
The scope of Dominic’s criminality extended far beyond a personal betrayal or a bitter divorce. He was involved in international money laundering spanning two continents.
“Why did he use my name on the competency petition?” I asked, reading through the Italian wire transfer logs.
“Because under Italian financial law,” Bellini replied, “if a primary trustee is declared legally incompetent due to psychiatric impairment, the secondary corporate signatory—in this case, Vanessa Cole—assumes absolute immunity from criminal forfeiture proceedings regarding the trust assets.”
Dominic hadn't just tried to declare me insane to take my son. He had prepared to use my legal destruction as a human shield to avoid fifty years in an Italian federal prison.
I looked up at Prosecutor Richard Vance. “What do you need from me?”
The prosecutor laid a digital recorder on the table between us.
“Dominic’s attorneys have reached out for a private settlement conference tomorrow morning at his Fifth Avenue penthouse,” Richard Vance said. “He believes you are exhausted, recovering from a C-section, and ready to sign a quiet non-disclosure agreement in exchange for shared custody.”

A cold, dangerous smile touched my lips.
“Give me the wire,” I said quietly.
