Chapter 9 - The Arrest

The heavy oak front doors of the penthouse burst open with a sudden, thunderous crash.
Eight federal agents armed with sidearms swept into the grand foyer, led by Federal Prosecutor Richard Vance and Investigator Marco Bellini.
“Dominic Vance! Charles Vane!” Prosecutor Vance announced, his voice booming through the high-ceilinged apartment. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit international wire fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, and subornation of perjury!”
Dominic stumbled back against the fireplace mantel, his face turning paper-white. “This is a mistake! My legal team—”
“Your legal team is currently being served with federal search warrants at their offices on Wall Street,” Prosecutor Vance interrupted, stepping forward with handcuffs ready. “Hands behind your back, Mr. Vance.”
Two federal officers grabbed Dominic’s arms, pulling them firmly behind his back and snapping the steel cuffs onto his wrists.
Dominic thrashed against their grip, his polished composure completely shattering into pathetic, desperate rage.
“Clara!” he screamed, staring at me as they dragged him toward the elevator. “You can’t do this to me! I am your husband! I built everything you have! You are nothing without me!”
I walked up to him, stopping inches from his face as the elevator doors opened behind the officers.
I leaned in close, my voice barely above a whisper, echoing in clear, flawless Italian:
“Mio figlio non saprà mai il tuo nome.” (My son will never know your name.)
Dominic’s mouth opened in shock, but no sound came out.
The federal agents shoved him into the elevator car, and the brass doors slid shut with a definitive, heavy metallic clang, taking Dominic Vance away forever.
Charles Vane was handcuffed right behind him, crying quietly into his tie as two female agents escorted him down the service stairs.
I stood alone in the center of the quiet penthouse, surrounded by the sunlight streaming over Central Park.
