Chapter 10 - The Real Kiss

Six months later.
The ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago glittered under a thousand gold lights.
It was the annual Charity Gala for the St. Anne’s Medical Research Foundation. Five hundred guests—doctors, philanthropists, community leaders, and city officials—filled the hall, drinking champagne and celebrating the opening of the new Vale-Caruso Oncology Wing.
Naomi stood near the center of the room, wearing an exquisite floor-length emerald green silk gown. Her hair was styled in elegant waves, her skin glowing, her mother standing beside her looking healthy, radiant, and completely cancer-free.
Music floated softly from the grand stage near the marble staircase.
Vincent walked through the crowd toward her. He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, looking handsome, commanding, and serene. He carried no weapons, no security guards followed him, and his name was no longer spoken in hushed terror across courtrooms.
He stopped in front of Naomi.
The crowd around them didn't freeze in fear. People smiled warmly, pointing out the young power couple who had transformed the city’s philanthropic landscape.
“Miss Vale,” Vincent said softly, offering his arm with a courtly bow. “May I have this dance?”
Naomi placed her hand over his arm, looking up at him with endless love. “You didn't ask for permission six months ago at the Halstead Grand.”
Vincent laughed softly, pulling her close against his chest as the orchestra began to play a slow, graceful waltz.
“Six months ago, I was a foolish man using a brilliant woman to fight a war,” Vincent whispered into her hair as they moved smoothly across the floor. “Tonight, I’m just a man who knows how lucky he is.”
Naomi leaned her head against his shoulder, feeling the steady, warm beat of his heart beneath his tuxedo.
“You know,” Naomi murmured playfully, looking up into his dark eyes, “the last time you kissed me in a ballroom, I dropped three thousand dollars worth of crystal champagne glasses.”
Vincent stopped moving at the center of the floor, right beneath the grand chandelier.
He looked down at her with a warmth so deep, so intense, that the rest of the crowded ballroom seemed to fade away into quiet shadows.
“Then let's make sure we get it right this time,” Vincent whispered softly.
He reached up, placing his large, warm hand gently against her cheek, tilted her chin up, and lowered his lips to hers.
This kiss carried no vengeance, no anger, no public scandal, and no hidden agendas. It was soft, sweet, deep, and filled with the unbreakable promise of a future built on truth, love, and mutual devotion.

Around them, the four hundred guests in the ballroom broke into warm, enthusiastic applause.
Naomi wrapped her arms around Vincent’s neck, pulling him closer, kissing him back with all the joy in her soul as the golden lights of Chicago sparkled around them like a thousand rising stars.
